NEBOSH International Diploma with no OSH experience?

Hi everyone.
My name is Kacper and this is my first post here. I would like to ask you for some advice. I am thinking about NEBOSH International Diploma but I don't have any practical expercience within Occupational Health and Safety. What is your recomendation - it is better to catch some experience before? I work offshore on daily basis as an office delegate and I am doing some small sessions with the crews related to the HSE matter. But this is not strict HSE department position. I have passed my IGC with first attempt and I like it. But before I will do the first step into Diploma I would like to ask you for some recomendation - International Diploma without experience in OSH. Yes or definitely no go zone? Best Regards, Kacper

Hi Kacper Getting some H&S experience would certainly be helpful when undertaking a diploma as it gives real life context to the things you are studying. However, it is not essential to completing the diploma. But I have to add the diploma is challenging and a steep step up from the certificate.

Hi Kacper Your first post so welcome to the Forums. Your Forum profile indicates that you are a Member of IOSH, so I am going to look at this on a slightly wider basis, as your route up the IOSH ladder, if you want to climb it, is dependent on both on academic qualifications but also "experience". Some tend to work on the basis that "experience" means that you have to have (Health and) Safety in your job title but if H&S is managed as a integral part of everyone's job function, and particularly those in managerial and supervisory positions, then they SHOULD be clocking up "health and safety experience". If you think about your job, you could estimate how much of your time is spent doing "health and safety" things either as part of the job as standalone elements. Suppose something has to be done. An instruction is given that a "method statement" be developed for that "something to be done". Most of the time this method statement isn't going to work if it ONLY covers the health and safety aspects. You have to make the judgement but my guess is that you probably have far more "H&S" experience than you give yourself credit for! So, if the NEBOSH route suits you, then go for the Diploma and good luck! P
