I'm about to start a consultancy and would appreciate any advice from those that have trodden this path before. I will be employing others and there is a need for my own written H&S policy. This may seem odd for someone who is about to embark on such a venture but I would appreciate some advice on the contents for a consultancy. Hope this makes sense.

Without an indication of the scope of comment you would find useful, it's difficult to know where to begin and end.
In relation to Health and Safety, the usual policy and practice considerations apply as set out in the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, covering 'competence', risk assessment and management. In particular, have written agreements with anyone you employ in any capacity about the extent of his/her responsibility for health/safety as your employee or agent; if they're self-employed, see a copy of their current PI cover.
Depending on the areas you specialise in, you may find it useful to check out at this stage how to assess capability and working styles of professionals in areas you are not familiar with. For example, if you are not well trained in occupational stress management, and wish to employ someone in this area, as effective methodologies in this area are not so well known within the OSH field, how validly can you assess their suitability in advance?
Good wishes

Hi
Don't forget to register to pay NI class 2, within 3 months of starting or you'l get an automatic £100 fine. The local tax office have a freindly advice centre, (they are nothing to do with the investigation side!) They can come to you to explain all your tax obligations and answer any questions on book keeping, capital allowances and stuff.
Your local Business Link usually has a SME advice centre. Score well with your designated business advisor and you may get mentioned to other companies.
Your local InBiz company run schemes on becoming self employed, creating business plans, tax obligations, seeking funding or gaining capital.
Consider jointing the SBF, Chambre of Commerce etc, they do have group discounts on insurance, cc machines etc.
All the best.
Linda
