I have been asked by my employer to get myself qualified as a planning supervisor. I am keen to do this as I have an interest in this area, and so would like to ensure I undertake the best course available. Can anyone recommend a good course and provider that will lead to a recognised qualification in this field?
Thanks in advance of any responses.
Carl.

Carl,
In the next eighteen months or so, we may well have the next generation of CDM regulations. As I understand it, the Planning Supervisor role may well disappear to be replaced by the co-ordinator, hence why there are now a considerable number of planning supervisor vacancies and the Association of Planning Supervisors have changed there name to the Association of Project Safety.
As the co-ordinator's functions are to include advising the client on the suitability and compatibility of designs and on any need for modification, I suspect that issue of training and competence for this role is going to be very different to that of the planning supervisor.
I will be interested to see which professional group takes on this role, but I suspect it will be the architects who will be leading this, if only it is the fact that the client is required to appoint co-ordinator before they appoint a designer.
I shall be interested in other comments on this subject.

Arran lets be fair it is carl's question
Carl I suggest you contact the Association For Project Safety who as Arran says used to be Association of Planning Supervisors on www.aps.org.uk who will sort you out. There is no PS qual with any official standing in spite of what some trainers say, do the APS one as a starter but also the NEBOSH Construction Cert is a good one to have. We train in CDM for some big and small organisations and I do a lot of PS work - email on richardaltoft@btconnect.com if you have any probs
best of luck

I agree with Arran (Hi, Arran, by the way!). Hold back until we know what the Regs are going to look like. I'm also suspicious of the idea of becoming a "competent" person by going on a short course; the role of the Planning Supervisor is far more onerous than can be satisfied by a week's lectures. Time and experience are the only things that really count.
