Posted By cfraser I have now been trying to tie down that elusive position in Health and Safety for some time now, but it seems that if you dont have approx two years full time experience and Nebosh Diploma you are going nowhere. Have IOSH set up any kind of company database where like minded souls could gain experience, 'dare I say it free of charge'? If not, are there any companies within East Yorkshire that would like to give an enthusiastic in-experienced person a chance of gaining some experience within health and safety and both parties getting something out of it. best regards Colin

Posted By David Brede Have you thought of charities or other not for profit organisations? I work on an unpaid basis for my local Citizens Advice Bureau. They need H&S specialists or trustees to do all the regular bits, eg write H&S Plans, do site inspections, develop risk assessments, COSHH etc. Some of their environments are quite challenging e.g. lone workers, fraught or even hostile 'customers'. Not bad for people many of whom come to work for the love of it. You can learn a lot from this kind of experience and it looks good on your cv

Posted By Robert Paterson Hi Colin If you subscribe to the SHP magazine you will notice an article on finding the first rung on the ladder in the IOSH section. This is an idea I first put on this forum and through sterling work by Geogre Wedgewood IOSH are going to have a pilot programme where companies can register for work experience placements. That would help yourself andd countless others who are trying to get that vital experience. I know that might not help you at the moment but very shortly there could be an avenue to further enhance the ability of companies to develope good Health and Safety practice. Kind Regards Robert Paterson

Posted By Thomas Kennedy Colin You didn't indicate what background, experience or training you have at present. Also what you're doing for now while you find a position. A way I got experience was by becoming a health and safety rep in my own workplace. Once you start partcipating at committee meetings, undertaking inspections/workplace tours, being consulted on H&S policy, procedures and so on, you begin to pick things up rather quickly. You'll soon find it's line managers doing the bluffing! Also if you are a TU rep you can get loads of training for free - get racking up the certificates. It shows committment. I'm sure if you target your training to the job industry that interests you, you won't be on the sidelines for long. Happy hunting. Tommy
