Hello
Can anyone tell me how to start a career in Health & Safety?
There don't seem to be any jobs at the lower levels.
Thanks,
Colin

There is no magic formula. Much depends on being in the right place at the right time. However, enthusiasm and ambition count for a lot.
As I have said to someone else - volunteer for everything you can, whether it is at work, at IOSH meetings, at your kids school - whatever. People are generally happy to have health & safety volunteers!
Ignore the doubters, and focus on where you want to go and what you want to be. People that seek out opportunities at every turn start to find opportunities presenting themselves when they are not expected.
Kind regards
Nick

Make sure that your CV reflects ALL experience, no matter how small, in an HONEST light. Choose an area of industry in which you wish to build your career and then carry out research into the companies working within the sector you choose, keeping a close eye on their websites for vacancies. Should you not see any vacancies, phone the HR Manager or Safety Manager (Names can be easily obtained through receptionists) to discuss how you might get into a role within their company. Sounds a little obvious and straightforward, but believe me, it works.
I get the odd Assistant Safety Officer / Trainee requirement from time to time with a couple of my clients in the Construction and Utilities sectors. I DONT HAVE ANYTHING CURRENTLY which doesn't require experience, but it might be worthwhile you sending me your CV for future vacancies if you wish. Please send it by email to craig.ruff@millbank.com
Good luck getting into the Industry!

I can totally sympathise with you, I am in exactly the same boat, and am finding it really frustrating, I self funder my Gen. Cert and am willing to take a pay drop, even at worst do full time voluntary to gain experience.
At the moment I am making an extra push at trying to get in the market and recently spoke to Craig Ruff who has posted a comment on this thread and he provided me with some good advice.
I found this good as I was wasnt thinking about obvious avenues into the industry as I was to close to it all, it proved worthwhile hearing suggestions and feedback from someone else on how to try and enter the industry.
Good luck!

hi Zack
i had exactly the same problem 5 years ago, the best way is to continue in your current job and ask your employer if you can spend some time doing h & s work. Carry on doing that for a while until you have some experience then when you apply for another job arrange your cv to push h & s to the forefront, it does work but takes time. The chance of getting a position with just the NEBOSH general and no experience is slim unless you go as a junior.
Good luck Tommo

I applied for a position in health and safety with my employer recently. my idea is to get involved in health and safety for a while than study further into my NEBOSH Diploma. or shall I just go ahead and study further with no experience?
