Posted By Trudy Sharp Hi, I've been Tech SP for 16 months since obtaining Dip1 and have been enrolled on CPD for the last 12 months. I'm due to finish NVQ4 in February 2006 and complete my first 2 years CPD in June 2006. Anyone know if I will then be able to apply for chartered membership status or do I have to apply for Grad. membership and then do another 2 years CPD? The new structure isn't overly clear on this! Answers on a dustbin lid... Cheers, Trudy.

Posted By Hazel Harvey Trudy, Upon completion of your qualification you will need to apply for regrading as a Grad IOSH and complete a full 2 year IPD process. There are no exemptions from this process for people wishing to progress to CMIOSH even if they have been TechSPs.

Posted By Trudy Sharp Thanks Hazel. I'm now more confused - why was I advised by IOSH to register for CPD after completing Dip1 in order to make progression to full member easier and quicker upon completion of NVQ4 if I now have to do yet another 2 years CPD post NVQ4 before I can become a full member? I thought full membership was supposed to be NVQ4/Dip 2/Dip 6 plus 2 years CPD. By the time I get full membership I'm going to have 4 years CPD - so really I've enrolled 2 years too early!

Posted By Hazel Harvey Trudy, All members of IOSH at whatever category are advised to enrol for CPD to demonstrate their commitment to the development of their skills in health and safety. For many at TechSP level this will be via a further qualification such as the NVQ. From the introduction of the new membership structure later this year there will be a requirment for all potential Chartered MIOSH to enrol for Initial Professional Development and to spend at least 2 years in the Grad IOSH category as part of the process. IPD and CPD are completely different processes. Where you are getting confused is that as part of the transitional arrangements from the current system to the new one is that there is a requirement for all MIOSH to complete a 2 year CPD cycle before they can transfer to Chartered. The entry to MIOSH closes on the 30th September this year and applicants after this date will not be eligible for these tranitional arrangments. The MIOSH category will disappear towards the end of 2007 when the 2 year CPD cycles finish. Had you been able to complete before 30th September you would have been eligible for these arrangements but as you haven't I am afraid it is the new IPD that you will need to complete. Any CPD you have undertaken will assist you when you are interviewed by a peer review panel towards the end of the IPD period so it isn't all wasted.
