Posted By Danny Newman I'm currently wanting to start a career in the Health & Safety Industry. I have looked into the NEBOSH Certificate etc, but have problems with the financal backing. Is there any jobs or agencies that are in the position to guide me through what I can do, i.e jobs available in the industry that train people from the beginning. Any advice would be much apreciated. Many Thanks Danny

Posted By Davies Edward Brown Danny If you can convince your employer that completing the course would be beneficial to him as well as you, you will at least get started.

Posted By Terry Reading Danny Have you looked at the distance learning option? I appreciate this may still not be cheap, but may bring it within either your employers or your own reach if they still wont support you. Good luck. T.

Posted By Graham Hicks Danny Only a thought, and Ido not know where in the country you are but it may be worth asking at the job centre or citizens advice with regard to community projects, I know that Kingston Upon Hull were operating The Humber Community Partnership and were taking on "safety apprentices" a while back, basicaly they would allow you to train i.e Nebosh, and other courses that funding would allow and also find placements to enable you to gain some experience within SHE departments. There is no cost to the participants and they are paid minimum wage whilst training, Ihope this may be of some use, Regards Graham

Posted By gham Danny Have you thought about negotiating a sum of money towards your fees from your employer and doing it distance learning so that it does not intrude into your work. I've found with a few of my friends and her indoors that sometimes if they don't pay for it at the start they soon aknowledge that you are taking it seriously when you start and this prompts them to offer either more money or to cover the fees n full. I think it's got something to do with the fact they may be wasting the money if you don't follow it through. Also even if they don't fund it at least if you start there are employers out there that may take you on in a trainee or junior position, including LA's, may of which are big on personal development. My advice would be to go for it, I've kept it up from when i started H&S 2.5 years ago with the company that i now work for and their H&S Dept approched me, I think i have been really lucky though H&S is a very diverse discipline, you've got to start somewhere and even if it's a slog to start off with it will pay off very quickly
