Inspector considering broadening horizons

I've been an inspector with the HSE for the past 6 years +, but am considering a move to the 'real world' to broaden my experience and develop my skills as an H&S practitioner. I'd be interested to hear the viewpoints of:
a) ex-inspectors who have made the move (positive and negative experiences!)
b)those in industry (ie. whether as an ex-inspector I'd be considered too brainwashed to function in the real world!)

I was an EHO for over 10 years, went into consultancy for 3 - did not like - so have been back in local govt in an advisory role since 2002. It was a steep learning curve - first step is to realise that you can't make anyone do anything. It takes a while to learn to shrug your shoulders & walk away - having put all your advice in writing, just in case....
On the plus side, employers seem to like ex-enforcement officers as we know what we would have prosecuted for & when the inspector is bluffing!
Good luck with whatever you decide

I did 12 years in HSE, and have been in a multi-disciplinary consultancy for 13 years since.
Working in a wide variety of sectors, when I was an Inspector gave me good grounding, expert understanding of H&S law, and vast experience of incident investigation.
However, much prefer spending time advising clients as to how they can avoid the accidents and occupational ill health.
Now spend very little time on reactive work, except expert witness commissions [including to help the defence to HSE prosecutions!!]
If you decide to make the move make sure your CV sets out the range of sectors you have worked with and the breadth of your incident investigation especially any fatals [that are not sub judice].
Good luck.
