Posted By Anne Jacques I have posted several job adverts for London based H&S consultants in the past (most recent one is just below this posting) and have had hundreds of hits but not nearly as many applications. Let me know what you're really looking for in a Consultancy position and we'll see what we can offer! Thanks for looking and hopefully responding.

Posted By Elizabeth Lithgow Hello Anne, I haven't seen any of your adverts as I'm a fairly new Tech SP. However, if you're interested, I'm looking to moving from being a health and safety rep into a mainstream health and safety role within a 20-25 mile orbit of Northampton. Haven't seen anything on the forum to meet this criteria as ye. Regards Liz

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Anne I'm an independant Consultant & Trainer. The considerable majority of the posted vacancies simply aren't aimed at utilising my value in that role. Perhaps there should be a reappraisal with regard to how those in need can get best value from such providers as myself. Frank Hallett CFIOSH

Posted By Helen Horton Hi - in my previous incarnation, in a consultancy company, we tried several times to recruit a variety of H&S related staff for the London area with little luck. I think there is a distinct lack of people with the right skills in your area and steep house prices and the like put people off from relocating

Posted By Linda Westrupp Hi, I would agree with some of the other replies here, I am interested in a new position but there is no way I could afford to live in London, and I wouldn't feel comfortable with the crowds and the culture anyway. I think the biggest problem is that you can earn similar salaries in places where the quality of life is much better and the costs are considerably lower.

Posted By Anne Jacques Dear All, Thanks for your responses and Happy New Year. For those interested in a position please see our ad in the Safety and Health Practitioner this month (Jan 06 page 96). In addition to consultants we are looking for a H&S Advisor in the South East to service one of our major clients across their regional portfolio of properties so if you don't have full MIOSH (i.e. CMIOSH or GradOSH) we may still be interested. e-mail me your CVs if you are - anne.jacques@turntown.co.uk

Posted By Anna Blukacz Hi Anne, First of all it was a good idea to get the candidates to email you what they are looking for. So I will take my chance and tell you what I need. I'm currently working as a Recruitment Consultant but looking for a career change. I'm currently looking for work as a Health & Safety/Risk Assessment Assistant within London or Surrey (around Croydon/Sutton). I've got some experience in doing a Health and Safety assessment of the clients premises (COSHH, Manual Handling, Risk Assessment) and risk assessment at work (office based) and I've just completed the NEBOSH General National Certificate in December and awaiting the result. I speak fluent English and Polish. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Anna Blukacz

Posted By Robert Green Hi Anne I hope you don't mind me sending you this enquiry. I am leaving the armed forces in 1 years time and looking at starting a career in H&S. I will be leaving the Army with DipNEBOSH, IOSH Chartered Membership. I have little experience in this field, only to say as a line manager I have been heavily involved in Risk Assesment of civilian and military locations and venues across Europe. Most of the advets for H&S posts seem to require min 2-3 years experience. Can you suggest a career path to obtain the relevant experience within this field. I am aware you are not a HSE helpline or advice centre but I am finding it difficult obtaining sound advice and fear my hard work in obtaining my qualifications will be wasted. Hope you find the time to reply to this if not cheeky but desperate request. Thanking you in advance for your consiferation Robert Green Pipe Major R IRISH

Posted By Anne Jacques Hi Robert I think you may be selling yourself short - I suspect you couldn't have acquired your IOSH membership without being able to demonstrate good H&S experience as well as your qualifications. The secret may be in making sure all relevant H&S experience is included on your CV (but don't let your CV go over 2-3 pages). There are lots of people in H&S who have come from a forces background so I'm sure you'll get there. Good Luck Anne

Posted By HOWARD SHELDON Hi Anne , I am currently working as a Health and Safety inspector with 11 years experience , and yes I am interested in moving to consultancy work. Frankly however it amazes me just how many of the health and safety consultancies are located in London . Lets face it the very high cost of living and Londons transport congestion are not attractive . For me it would probably be easier to get to most areas of Souhern England and the Midlands from where I am located on the outskirts of Birmingham than if I were located in most areas of the London conurbation . In addition the cost of living is far lower , the general living environment is better , the transport links are very good and most of the gorgous countryside of England and Wales is easily accesable. Howver I think an other problem that some companies experience in recruiting is that it is that they do not supply enough initial information in their advertisements in respect of what a potential employee can expect from the role particulary in respect of working arrangements and I have to say this breeds some distrust of consultancies .There was an earlier piece of post from a chap who wants to move from being a manager to being a consultant and he seemed worried as he said he had heard bad things . My experience in Local Goverment is that when a position is advertised the salary range , pension , holiday , working hours and arrangements are made clear . Often however this is not made clear with consultancies and this breeds suspicion . I think I know what would be expected of me if I work for a consultancy but I really am not certain . I know I won`t get the same deal and benefits I currently get but then I would expect the salary to reflect this . I just personally think that consultancies when advertising just need to more honest then you would not get loads of people expressing an interest and then finding that the lifestyle of the consultant would not appeal to them or that the salary is not commensurate with the work they would be expected to do . kind regards Howard

Posted By Richard Stewart Howard over 1/4 of the England's population lives within 25 miles of the M25. According to a recent article in The Times 1/3 of England's working population within have there offcie base this area. That is why so many consultancies have more work than they can manage in the London area. Yes they could easily take on 50 people to work in Yorkshire or Lancashire but could they bring in enough business to justify this? I think not Richard

Posted By HOWARD SHELDON Thanks Stwert , I am aware of the demographics of the country thank you , it is the primary reason why the south east is becoming a concrete jungle and running out of water , that is until it dissappears due to global warming . However in todays modern world of the computer you would think that many companies no longer need to be in the London conurbation and would be taking the econmic advantage advantage of relocating to areas where property and infrastructure would aid the profits of their business . Then again London has its delights if you have the money to enjoy them .

Posted By Anne Jacques Dear All Thanks for your interest and comments. I can't disagree about the disadvantages that London creates - in fact T&T have 11 offices around the UK so I've see the pros and cons of each. However the reality of our business here is that many of our clients from this office are London based and require us to be local to them for frequent meetings, site inspections etc. Regards Anne
