Posted By Helen1 Hi All, I want to get a career in H&S. I have worked in manufacturing but mainly in IT, although I had a month or two doing safety internal audits in a warehouse. I am awaiting the result of my cert, and would like to know (presuming that I've passed) How to get my first HS job. I am based in Wrexham in North Wales (North West), and would travel to Cheshire, Shropshire, Liverpool, Manchester. Please advise on companies to approach, and how best to proceed. Many thanks, Helen.

Posted By Christopher Kelly Hello Helen, your experience seems to be limited to office type environments so you need to concentrate on that. Experience is most important but, unfortunately without professional status with IOSH / IIRSM positions are difficult to find. General and Construction H&S Certificate don't count for much unless you are managing safety as 'part' of other responsibilities. There is a posting in SHP this month which would suit you, for DSE risk assessors. They are only asking for NEBOSH Cert.Try their website: www.shponline.co.uk/jobs_display.asp?job_id=4039. They are looking for someone with Occupational Health experience - it might be a good idea if you did your Occ Health Certificate, although they are probably looking for medical experience. There is lots of work for DSE / Office risk assessors (particularly London) and it is comparatively well-paid. Recommend that you get some experience with basic fire risk assessment / control as well as other office risks to broaden your utilisation. Adverts in SHP get lots of responses and there is a lot of competition so you need to differentiate yourself. Try some consultancies who are often looking for sub-contractors to do DSE risk assessments, suggest you concentrate on this area and build up your other experience and courses / certificates such as fire, manual handling etc. If you do get into general health and safety be careful about getting involved with companies who are just looking for a H&SO with no experience to produce paperwork which, on the surface demonstrates compliance with the law, but actually just helps them in not investing in improvement of safety on the ground. There are a lot of them about! I hope this is of some help
