I've got an interview for what will be my first full time role as a H & S Manager. I've been asked to prepare a 10 min presentation to discuss some impending legislation to the Senior Management Team. I have got to convay the impact of the legislation and propose a plan of action. I can select any legislation, can anybody give me some pointers as to what may be a good subject to cover and how I may get this across.
This is the ideal job for me so any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Kelli

It may be usefull to find out what legislation would most impact on your prospective employer, that way not only should you be able to give them an insight into how it will affect them, but will also show that you have done some research on potential problem areas for them.
It is always usefull to consider the impact and the cost implications of any new legislative proposal, most employers in my experience, will be looking for low cost, no cost solutions.
You need to tailor your presentation according to the audience, you need to be both technical and practical. You obviously need to be sure of what you are talking about, should the audience want to ask questions and if possible consider alternatives. Dont have one fixed route to compliance unless there is only one route.
Make sure you are clear about what you want to say and most important be confident.
Hope this helps

Hi Kelli
Just a few suggestions:
First, if they have given you a 10-minute slot, they are not asking for an in-depth answer. They are more likely to be testing / proving your knowledge of current legislation and your ability to form an action plan for the implementation of changes. I.e. they want to establish that you know what to do, rather than how to do at this stage?
Like Paul said try to pick out something that is current and relevant to their business, this could be the Fire Reform Act (although delayed again) the Physical Agents directive i.e. the new noise at work levels, vibration etc (Look on the IOSH or HSE web site for pending legislation)
Ensure that you know the implementation date, are there any dates for staged introductions (such as IPPC, CoMAH, ATEX), s you can set a realistic timetable for implementation.
Determine the likely impact it will have on the company, reviewing assessments, plant modifications, purchasing policy (i.e. to stop ordering now non-compliant products such as ear defenders that will no longer give the protection required.). Any training issues, toolbox talks etc
.
You could suggest that a gap analysis be carried out to document changes that have to be made.
Plan an audit soon after the changes have been made to ensure compliance and evaluate the effectiveness of any changes that have been made.
Regards
Ian

If you only have 10 minutes, I reckon the main aim is to test your presentation and commmunication skills. Keep it as simple as possible, can you let me know what industry your interview revolves around and i'll be able to give you a few more pointers.
cheers
Paul

How about the Corporate Manslaughter Bill should catch their attention?

Kelli, I have had to do this. Chose "what might cdm 2006 mean for us". the interviewer wasnt interested in the what, but rather in the who and how, if you get my drift. Be confident and believe what you are saying, you will be fine.

How about either asbestos regs become just one regulation and the saveings that might bring, or the change to the fire regulation 2006 and the effect that will have have on a comapny, dont gorget that they might not have a frie risk assessment.

Many thanks for all your responses it's been a great help. My interview is with a very large Local Authority so i'm sure some of your suggestions would work well.

Kelli,
Use noise. The implications are widespread but the impllmentation strategies are already well grounded. ABOVE all else REHEARSE!! Until you can do it with your eyes closed. Take a prompt list with you even then. DO NOT read it from text and look each one in the eye!! They are looking at your delivery more than content or they would have specified what your talking about.
Good Luck

Hi Kelli,
The new Housing,Health and Safety Rating System is going to have a significant impact on many LA's and could be worth considering. Might want to tie it in with reducing costs by combining this with a review of the housing asbestos register?
