Posted By Ned Kelly Hi All, I am due to leave the Forces after 22yrs and I will be living in the North West. I am from an engineering background (Aviation electrical)and I want to work in H&S. I have NEBOSH Dip 1 (I am TechIOSH) and NEBOSH Environmental Dip,I also have military qualifications in H&S (Unit Safety Advisor, Unit Safety Manager, Noise Assessor, Energy Warden). I also have military quality qualifications which have given me AIQA status. I have a fund of £1000 a year (one hit) for 3yrs, my question is,"what courses should I use it on, to make myself more employable?"

Posted By Vincent Hearn Ned, You obviously need to do courses that will get you the academic underpinning knowledge for Grad IOSH and then ultimately CMIOSH (with experience and CPD). Your choices as I see it are: NEBOSH Diploma (with bridging course from Dip 1), NEBOSH Diploma Part 2 (the Dip 1 is pre-requisite but finding a training provider could be difficult) or find suitable employment and go for NVQ Level 4 in OSH. I think there are training providers that are ELC registered, failling that it's self fund or get an obliging employer to pay (I was fortunate in that my employer put me through Dip 2). As for your CV, I think you need to stress your experience as well as the courses passed. Many civilian employers are unaware of military safety related courses (you just shoot people don't you?) so explaining the fact that you may have carried out Noise Surveys, Quality Audits and subsequent actions that have benefitted organisations should be stated. If you've got any training qualifications as well is beneficial to employers. Regards, Vince

Posted By Linda Crossland-Clarke Hi Consider if you could use some of your current MOD work experience for the NVQ 4, this may get you half way to its achievement. If you managed to get some consultancy work in your field of expertise this could allow you to finish the NVQ. Then you could add to your knowledge through a choice of CPD courses, depending on which direction you wanted to go. All of which could be done through the ELCAS scheme. Regards Linda SHE Knows.

Posted By Ned Kelly Hi Vince and Linda, Thanks for the response. I have been considering the NVQ 4 route, however I am just waiting to see what happens work wise when I leave in April. I have experience as I was the Unit Safety Advisor for my last two units, which will help towards the NVQ route. Regards, Ned.

Posted By Neil Denning Hi you could consider Leeds Met UNI with your previous Qualifications you would be able to complete the course in one year then achieve GRADOSH. You could even do it distance learning. If you would like contact details let me know via this thread and I will forward them.
