Posted By John Sh Is management of environment seen as just an add on to the role of the Health & Safety Manager, much in the way NEBOSH treat the entry requirements for the Environmental Diploma (ideally a candidate should hold the H&S Diploma)or is there a place out there for environmemtal specialists who have health and safety as a second string. Do employers prefer to use specialist consultants for environmental work or to add it on to the existing H&S role? I passed the Specialist Environmental Diploma without having obtained the H&S Diploma (I even got a very high level distinction)but the openings out there seem limited. Consultancy jobs are either very poorly paid at entry level or require several years consultancy experience for more senior roles. Coming in to the profession later in my working life limits the oportunities to go in at the lower levels. There seems to be limited availability of opportunities for people where their experience and knowledge is tipped towards the environmental side rather than the H&S side. Any thoughts would be welcome. Either post a reply or send an e-mail to me directly j.shirtliff@ntlworld.com ps. I am a qualified chemist (MRSC)and member of IEMA (AIEMA). In addition to the NEBOSH Level 6 Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management I have a Diploma in Pollution Control, NEBOSH General Certificate, City & Guilds 7302 Certificate in Delivering Learning and have had training in other areas such as environmental auditing, dangerous goods (ex DGSA), radiation protection, noise assessment, IOSH Managing safety. Experience of ISO 14001, PPC, in a manufacturing environmentas well as the H&S issues on a large chemical using site.

Posted By Carrie Ellerby John, my experiences in environmental seem very similar to your own; this is the field in which I started out and have been drafted into H&S due to the similarities between the two. I wouldn't despair as I still think there are many companies out there who will be impressed by your environmental control abilities. I recently enquired about a job, predominantly in H&S but I think what has tipped the balance is my ability to implement and manage ISO14001 as the company does not have this. Perhaps what this company doesn't understand is that, initially ISO14001 will involve a lot of work and will limit the work carried out on the H&S side of things. I understand that a lot of H&S specialists out there may disagree as they have implemented the system alongside their H&S work but I used to spend so much time perfecting the systems, perhaps because back then I could. Good luck with the job hunting. Carrie

Posted By Alexander Falconer My own experiences are also similar to carrie & yourself, however also had the QA add on. This also seems to be more and more common these days, due to the similarities with the ISO / OHSAS management standards. What employers do not realise, is the amount of work involved in all these disciplines - just feel they are gettingh three specialists for the price of one. Just make sure that your salary requirements reflect your worth/experience. The concept I normally use is to take it step by step, and ensure ownership is achieved by all employees - this helps to embed the systems into the business, and hopefully your employer sees its worth!
