Posted By winter I've been working as company H & S coordinator for the last 4 or 5 years and throughly enjoy the job. The one problem I have however is no formal qualifications. I've completed all the risk assessor type courses, Coshh, confined spaces, manual handling etc and even the off shoots like recently becoming the company first aider. Where should you suggest I head from here ? I've no idea about the differences between Iosh and Neebosh so any help would be most appreciated. Also could anyone give me a ball park figure as to what I should be expecting wage wise ? Many thanks for all your time and consideration.

Posted By Robert Jackson Wages would depend on experience, location and qualifications, you have been in your current role for 4-5 years (long gap, which one)with no Qualifications (or recognised ones)so maybe you should be looking at the moment of around 20-25k?? I personally suggest you go straight into the NEBOSH certificate as you have a working knowledge of H&S, the IOSH Managing Safely course is more basic and you may know most of what it offers.

Posted By winter Thanks, its closer to 5 years. The firm employs upwards of 150 men over 5 sites at present, would i get much of a benifit from the accreditations ? And I don't mean purely financially - though I am on a higher rate then quoted above, but its still a real struggle living on it here n london

Posted By Robert Jackson With recognised quals you are legible to join such organisations as IOSH and IIRSM which come with decent benefits Career wise, most employers ask for NEBOSH Cert as a minimum together with x years experience, you already have the hands on knowledge so getting the qualification can only increase your attractivness to employers will your employer pay for the course?

Posted By winter Possibly - but its the time off that could be the problem - the course is 12 or 13 days isn't it ? Plus I'm in the middle of a huge trenche of courses right now. I'm off on confined space assessor over the next 2 days. Thanks for all your help though. Out of interest what are the wages like at the upper end of the spectrum ?

Posted By Robert Jackson NEBOSH is 10 days theory one day exams then an off site practical assignment which has to be conducted in a controlled and monitored environment - basically someone has to say YES it was completed within the hours stipulated by NEBOSH, in reality who actually knows! Well, top end of the spectrum? how longs a piece of string, all depends on how far you fancy going, director level i would think pulls in a six figure salary if you find the right company, lower down anything between 40-60 for senior positions Thats purely my guess work from looking around vacancies - anyone out there feel free to correct me! Posted By winter Can I just say thank you to everyone, you've all been most helpful and I really do appreciate it. I was always a " hate the health and safety" bloke until I got singled out for our firm, now I wouldn't want any other job. I find it most rewarding and satisfying and hope to make it a career - even at this late age of 31 !
