Posted By Diane Could anyone help give me a good idea relating to the norm for hourly rates and expenses payable to a 'freelance' health and safety advisor. A good number of replies to this would give me a decent average to work from - thanks.

Posted By Ian H Diane This is a very difficult question to answer. It really comes down to what a client is willing to pay and what level of work you do in the market. What value you can add to a business can be equated to what you can charge. If you want to email me direct with your CV and details I could give you a better idea. This may surprise people, but the average day rate for a management consultant in the UK is £1,495 (Management Today survey). Unfortunately, due to the nature of most H&S work, not many people achieve this level of fees. Some very rough estimates for day rates are: - global expert at strategic level with blue chip £1500 to £3000 p/day - high level board work with large company £1000 to £1500 p/day - work with medium to large enterprise £750 to £1000 p/day - SME work (audits, training, procedures etc.) £500 to £750 p/day - small business or continual retained contract average £200 to £500 p/day I hope this gives you some idea. Again, these are only rough estimates and it really depends on what the market is prepared to pay. The best clients are the ones that focus on results and value and not unit price for your time. All the best Ian
