Posted By jessie, jamester Hi All, Just wanted your thoughts. I completed the NEBOSH Certificate in 2004, and previous to that completed a Diploma in Safety, Health and Risk Management (accredited by the Institute of Commercial Management). I have been working in the area of health & safety for the last two years, but am considering moving to the UK as oppurtunities to get experience seem to be more widely available. Has anybody else made the same move, or would you consider it a good move to make? As I'm only 23 with little experience it is fairly hard to even get interviews over here. I'd appreciate anybodies thoughts. Regards

Posted By AMD Hi Jessie, I intend to do the opposite of you & move back from London to Ireland so I hope the job front picks up as I only have the NEBOSH certificate to my name but luckily I am picking up valuable experience. Anyway, check out loadszajobs website, I noticed jobs for trainee postions in Health & Safety. Send me your email address & I can send you the exact site tomorrow

Posted By Christopher Kelly Hi Jessie - I moved to Cork from England to do my part 1 diploma at UCC in 2004, already had my NEBOSH cert. Found the course very good and did my Construction Cert there also, then decided to move back to the UK as my wife wasn't happy and finish off my diploma here. I have had lots of job offers here but with the right experience and qualificiations. At 23 you may have a problem demonstrating sufficient experience - personally I would make sure you had something before going to the expense and trouble of moving over, possibly for nothing. There are lots of people here looking for jobs who cannot get anything despite qualifications due to insufficient experience, just look around on this website. Hope this helps. Regards, Chris

Posted By Christopher Kelly Curious as to why you did your NEBOSH Cert after having done your diploma ? Presume your diploma was IOSH accredited ? If your course doesn't have IOSH or British Safety Council accredited then you are pretty much wasting your time. Would have thought it would have been better for you to do your construction cert or something else which would broaden your experience rather than going over much of the same old ground in less depth than in your diploma (as would be the case in doing your NEBOSH general cert). Regards, Chris

Posted By David J See this is what gets me, if it's not IOSH accredited then it's basicly useless? Away & jump, with that perception. The Two year full time ICM higher diploma I have done is not IOSH accredited, cause it wasn't A uni, rather a vocational college. What utter garbage, I have seen a safety statement of a two year part time OHS diploma holder from UCC in cork, & I can assure you there were no great shakes about it, the RA had about 6 items listed, & this was for a coach company. What a joke if we have now reached a point where qualification holders are only good enough if they hold an IOSH accredited UNI or nebosh peice of paper. Makes my blood boil how people are being tought to percieve what is an acceptable qually for Jobs.

Posted By Christopher Kelly Know all of that - been in the same position myself prior to having and quals but IOSH is the recognised standard. Suggest you speak to IOSH - they may give you a recognised professional status based on peer review / interview, may be quite happy to accept your qualifications. Or they may require some additional work from you but give you a dispensation for your existing qualifications. Speak to Hazel in the membership department - she will point you in the right direction. Sorry - but having applied for jobs in Ireland and UK without qualifications / recognised status I know how seriously employers and agencies take that piece of paper.
