Posted By kara Hello, I'm a 23 year old law graduate looking for any work placement and/or job opportunities in health and safety. I'm half way through my general certificate and am keen to build on what I've studied so far - but I'm not sure where to start!! Any guidance would greatly appreciated! Kara

Posted By Anwar Afzal Hi Kara I am not surprised that you are looking elsewhere than the legal proffession, but why health and safety? I know that safety involves interpretaion of law so it makes it easier to associate yourself with this line of work but is there any other reason for you. And where are you situated and what flexiability to do you have in relation to work and type of enviornment, anything that interests you most?

Posted By Ian Mitchell Hi Kara. I hope people will respond on this forum by saying that the legal approach of interpretation of miniscule sub-paragraphs of H+S regulations is not good H+S professionalism. It won't endear the practitioner to clients or workers, and must be backed up by practical/workable advice on compliance. In many cases, it isn't even worth quoting the regulation being contravened (negative), far better to say what can be done to improve H+S performance (positive). This is in no way whatsoever an indication that this would be your approach, just a debating point on what makes good credentials for H+S advisors, influenced by Anwar's post... Cheers and good luck in your search, Ian M

Posted By Bunny Kara, I am sorry that you have received such negativity from your posting so far. I promise you we are not all so eager to crush newcomers. I know another law graduate that went into health and safety, they became an inspector with the HSE though. You might have to accept that the way forward is not an easy one and you certainly won't get the money you would have by continuing in law. However, continue to be positive, enthusiastic and if possible willing to relocate. Keep posting on the forum to say that you are looking for work and something will turn up. Like most professions it is really hard to get a foot on the ladder but a positive attitude and persistence will pay off. Best of luck.

Posted By Anwar Afzal Hi Just a quick positive note on my earlier comments which were meant to be positive not negative. I worked in the legal proffession prior to changing my job, this was because my employer were interested in making money out of people's misery and i was told to ensure clients did not get off in a police station but to drag the matter to court so they could make money. I left the proffession and chose health and safety to save people's lives and to make it better for others. Anwar

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Kara Just a thought, could you not approach a legal practice that specialises in Health & Safety, thus satisfying both legal and Health and Safety desires? I have worked closely with some H&S lawyers in the past that had the certificate among other qualifications and they all seem to enjoy their jobs. All the best in whichever route you decide. CFT
