Hello Steve,

As you have a Local Authority background have you considered looking for roles in yours or neighbouring Authorities Health and Safety Teams (many have assistant roles for those progressing their qualifications / experience).

If there aren't any vacancies could you ask to be involved with projects that your Health and Safety team may be on with that reflect what you need to be doing for your NVQ?

Best of luck

Regards

Alan

hi Alan thankyou for taking an interest.Yes I have concidered jumping ship especialy recently but as for working with the risk management teams I had permission to work in different departments for the same wage im on now that is not an issue the problem is my managers although they would be pleased to see me else where they would have to pay the wage bill and they are not to keen on that also they dont like to see me improveing myself, as over the years I have become better qualified in most subjects and more of a threat to their positions of authority. Today I offered to work for the Risk Manager on my day off as I work 4 days a week I could give them my Mondays it was greeted with concern untill some one mentioned he could do it for nothing .I agreed I could and said I would but only to fulfill my needs and its not contractual unless a deal could be struck.Although I`m competant in my role I need to spread my wings and gain more experiance as that is more important to me than monetary gains that will come later. Thanks for your advice and its been much apreciated.
Best Regards

Steve,

You probably are already aware of this but just in case you aren't this web site has a lot of Public Service job vacancies.

http://www.jobsgopublic.com

Good luck and keep at it, I'm sure the break you are looking for will come.

Regards

Alan

Must be your lucky day! GMPTE in manchester have just posted an advert on their site for a H&S Advisor. It might be right up your street...I used to do H&S and the job looks a doddle to me, but I'm not NEBOSH qualified, unforch.

Google GMPTE and look under vacancies. Good luck!

I'm glad to see that some one in a similar position has actually managed to make some sort of advances. I too took my Nebosh Cert, along with other H&S based training, but despite several secondments in my multinational company it has all ground to a halt. I managed to get this far with help from the EHS office of my site but as he was not my direct manager and those that were did thier utmost to stop any progression, sinking to trying to sabotage my nebosh course, I have seen further secondments that were offered to me in the first instant taken away and given to others. I have been to a couple of job interviews but I think my age may now be against me for junior roles. As is mentioned in SHP regularly, it's the same old chicken and egg situation and no one seems to offer a way round it. I am now thinking all my effort and time will be wasted as I am not able to use my learning or years of experience in manufacturing.

I compleatly agree it seems that sterotyping is the norm and if you wear a uniform you are stigmatised once a bin man always a binman
