Hello folks,

I have an interview tomorrow for a large retailer as a Health and Safety advisor. I have done a bit of background reading on the company and its health and safety record etc but was wondering if anyone could advise me on any areas that might be of particular interest to the retail sector.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ronan,

These themes tend to prevail amongst Retailer looking to Recruit Safety professionals

- DDA
- Behavioural safety
- Getting "buy-in" from middle management
- Commerical awareness
- Management of safety in multiple locations

Hope that helps to start with

Richard

Think also about what they sell and any problems with:

Display setups, deliveries, transport, public safety, staff security (cash handling). etc.

Hi Ronan,

Good luck

Plus physical and verbal abuse, manual handling and access e.g. for shelfstacking, contractors doing all sorts including relayouts.

Plus issues of ergonomics including seating. Some, not all, recognise this and provide e.g. sit/stand seats.

Plus shift arrangements which give personnel the flexibility to use toilet and welfare facilties, and take other breaks.

Don't know what type of retailing you are going for but remember that lots of the non point of sale stuff e.g. shelfstacking is done outside opening hours, and whilst this in itself has problems [e.g. due to reduced supervision], with extended opening times up to 24 hours a day, increased interface between operational/maintenance etc activities and the public.

Regards, Peter

occupiers liability!

Carpark surfaces, slip trip and fall hazards, cleaning (chemicals and machines) spillages anything that would cause injury to the customer, due diligance checks on building fabric. Customers usually come well before staff in retail (my experience anyway). Look over Facilities Management issues and safety issue that can affect trading and customer perception.

Big retailers have AHU's on roofs usually, so think access to these areas and protection provided for different types of roof; Flat, pitched profile sheeting (Kalzip), and latchway/mansafe systems. High pressure systems e.g steam pods for ovens and Provers (assuming they are a food retailer). Gas safety, water hygiene management.........
