Currently I'm a self employed H & S consultant, CMIOSH, and looking at an employer with a vacancy for a part time H & S Officer?

I would like to pursuade the employer to appoint me as self employed and would like some suggestions for my argument.

I need to keep my fees high to cover my costs but the employer needs to know the advantages to them.

Any help will be appreciated.

They don't have to pay employers NI contributions and have a reduced level of liability in some ways.

They can cease the arrangement quicker if they are not happy with what you do (but you can also walk away more easily, which may put them off).

Depending on timescales there may be some assumed responsibility and other efficiencies (see details about IR35 I think?).

I'm sure some of the recruitment people can offer more with your question.

All the best

Thanks Ian,

Some of my thoughts are:

No pay while on holiday or off sick,
No need for office space, PC, software, etc.
No suppying mobile phone,
No PPE issue,

I pay my own insurance,
I supply my own car,
I sort out my own N I, income tax etc.

All of the above are plus points, what are the negatives:

No notice requirement on either side so employment can be terminated in the blink of an eye,

I may prioritise my Clients so they may not get me to "JUMP when they require"

Are there any more?

I have worked with people who have been employed on a self employed basis doing the same job as myself at considerable more pay. They were considered to be good at the job they did and towed the company line. They had already provided the organisation with a service so they were effectively already established. The benefits far outweighed the potential risks of taking on some one else on a permanent basis that the organisation would have had more problems getting rid of if things didn't work out. The issue of tax and finance isn't really an issue for a bigger organisation. They already have the systems in place. I think that they have the flexibility of your services, and you might work harder to keep the job may be an incentive for them.

I would be interested in hearing how you get on with this.

All the best on this initiative

The employer heard my fee/salary and said no to the Agency. They only want someone cheap and cheerful.

Thanks for the contributions.
