Posted By steve jones Hi all,
it appears that I'm am not "employable" in a Health & Safety role for everyone because i do not drive! i have never driven and find it a little bit funny to have this count against me.
i would welcome your opinions on this.
Many thanks
Steve

Posted By MAK Hi Steve,
Perhaps if you can demonstrate at interviews that you come armed with not only your relevant work experiences but also with excellent knowledge of the existing infrastructure public transport systems in the target work area, and all this whilst being environmentally friendly, some employers may be able to see past this.
Its probably worth trying to use it as a selling point, as long as the job requirements do not state 'requires clean driving licence'.
Good Luck.

Posted By Glyn Atkinson There are many job roles now that require multi-site assessments, and the only realistic way for these to be done by the one safety person is for that person to be able to drive, either their own vehicle properly insured, or through lease, company or pool car.
For example, I am based at one site, but have to look after the safety requirements of another in another area of the city.
I live 40 miles from my place of work, into another county and over the Humber Bridge link, and the public transport links are very poor, and would not enable me to fulfil my time requirements in this role without having a 12 to 14 hour day, with commuting needs on public transport.
Public transport is also no good if you are trying to catch up quickly with an accident investigation, and pool cars (and drivers) are not always readily available.
There are few truly office based one site jobs that come up for grabs, so realistically you are only being told a harsh truth - a full and clean driving licence is one of the quoted "Essentials" in most job specs at first interview stages nowadays.
My first thought is to ask if there is any health issue to consider why you have not taken up driving?
If not, and you want to fully integrate into job availability, then an intensive driving course would seem most appropriate, if you actually WANT to learn to drive, that's also another pertinent question.
