I am looking for my first Health and safety role but finding it extremely difficult as I don`t have any experience.
So I thought I would add to my cv to show my commitment to H&S.
I have NEBOSH Gen cert and have just completed city and guilds manual handling instructors course.
I was hoping that someone could recommend some more courses that could hopefully enhance my chances of gaining employment.

Have you thought about taking the Nebosh Diploma? It doesn't get much better in terms of offering an employer H&S qualifications.

You could try voluntary work as well in addition to further qualifications, this will assist you with experience as well as studying for further qualifications.

You may like to consider the construction certificate although much is duplicated with the one you already hold; if memory serves me there are three or four additional modules; with this in mind you can then look at construction as a possible route.

Whatever you decide, I wish you well for future achievements.

Thanks Charley,

Unfortunately I don`t have the time to do the Diploma at the moment.
I was looking to do the nebosh fire cert but nowhere in Hampshire does it.
Where would be a good place to look for voluntary work?

You could look at all charitable organisations in your area through the local media, library, etc.Once you have offered your services (and you need to be honest to them, and yourself, how qualified you are) you can judge the response and take it from there.

Any local group that comes under the protection of the HASAWA would be a good starting point.

All the best to you

Thanks again charley, will look into voluntary work.

If anyone else has any tips on courses I could take or advice on getting that first step on the ladder in h&s, any advice would be welcome.

Have self funded so far so money is not a problem......... I WILL SUCCEED...HOPEFULLY...

Simon, you could always go down the route of distance learning. I shan't name any suitable course providers but they do advertise in the Safety & Health Practitioner each month. You say you have no time, perhaps you are in full time employment and cannot be released from your normal place of work to be tutored. Distance learning could quite easily be undertaken during the evenings for pehaps an hour or two and at a steady pace.

As for voluntary work perhaps you could second yourself to a charitable organisation, I am sure they would be more than happy to accommodate you. I hope that this helps

Thanks Frank,

But I am still left wondering what courses would be worthwhile taking to enhance my employment prospects.
I really don`t mind self funding but what course/training would benefit me most?
Any ideas?
