Posted By Robert Paterson Seems like the age old question is just not going to go away.
Couple of years ago I posted on the forum for IOSH to try and help people like the posters on this forum to gain experience by getting a register up an running to enable "fist time" practitioners onto the career ladder.
I was told that a working party had been set up to look at this problem and would report back in October 2006. Still waiting on feedback and it is now February 2007.
Come on IOSH lets try and help these people get started

Posted By Hazel Harvey Robert, The working party on mentoring considered the issue of IOSH running a work experience scheme but did not make a recommendation that it should as they felt that mentoring for members progressing through the IPD scheme should be given the first priority. This was accepted by the Professional Committee. So basically at the moment we are not developing a scheme. Sorry, but there are only so many things that the Institution can do at once and at the moment we are in a major development of the membership structure and assessment and so I'm afraid an IOSH work experience scheme will not be happening just yet.It may be that it will be revisited in perhaps a couple of years but it just doesn't have priority at the moment. The issue has been discussed through the proper IOSH channels.

Posted By Robert Paterson Hi Hazel
Thanks for your response. I'm sorry that IOSH has decided not to progress. I think, considering the amount of postings on the forums with members and potential members looking for assistance into health and safety, an opportunity has passed us by.
Is there any advice or help from IOSH that would help these people get a start?
Lets hope in the future the mentoring party can revisit it.
Did the mentoring party produce a report on their findings and is there any way of getting a copy of it?
Thanks again for your response

Posted By Chris Ivan Hi Robert (and Hazel) I am in a similar positon -many of my commercial clients are looking for entry level safety people, with good NEBOSH passes (credit or above) to enter into their organisation who can be mentored. I appreciate that SHP4jobs has been set up so IOSH can provide a service (and take a fee), hence a possible conflict of interest between the vast number of HSE recruitment companies that support SHP but most employes dont feel for entry level that they should have to pay for recruitment, and really want a word of mouth recommendation It would be more useful if the IOSH branches developed e-newsletters or read out a list of possible work placement vacancies at their meetings or better still had a designated work placement officer- I intend to do this at my own South Downs meeting in March, as several opportunities in Kent and Sussex exist within my own client base for bright new HSE 'graduates' or second jobbers. have your tried www.safetynetworking.co.uk - they were looking to develop this as a free service to connect people - web membership free good luck anyway regards Chris
