I have been involved in health and safety for nine years now. I have been a union health and safety officer for the past eight.

I am qualified with the Nottingham Trent University Diploma in occupational safety, health and environmental management, and have gained CMIOSH, but still have the age-old problem of trying to get on that first rung of the health and safety ladder.

At present , i am working for a local authority in the North-west, but there are no positions available.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what my next step could be?

Neville,

I have read your post twice but find myself somewhat confused apologies in advance if I am missing the point of your post.

You say you wish to get on the first step of the ladder but you have a wealth of experience under your belt already eight years as a H&S officer, chartered membership of IOSH.

I assume that you had show to past experience in order to become a chartered member?

There are a multitude of agencies specialising in H&S, a quick search on Google will show up loads and these are always looking for experienced H&S professionals and those at the start of their careers.

Are you looking for a complete change of direction, ie; construction to offshore?

I am sure if you provide additional information people on this forum will be able to help more.

It feels a bit strange giving advice to someone so qualified as you have the qualifications I am hoping to gain in the next year or two.

Anyway best of luck in your search.

John

Thanks John,

It is a bit of a strange predicament to be in, but i am finding that the majority of posts are down south of the country, and with a partner and large family reluctant to move does narrow down the choices.

I am willing to try any type of job in health and safety as i do need to spread my wings a bit. but do find that there are posts which require other qualifications in addition to what i already have.

Neville,

Thanks for clarifying your position and good luck with your search, at least you are in the good position of actually having a job while you continue your search for something more suitable.

I have done all of my H&S courses with a really good provider in Carlisle which is not far from you.

Drop me a line if you would like their details.

All the best,

John
