Hi,

I am 2 years away from embarking on a new, and daunting life away from the military. I have an engineering background and began studying H&S with a view to a future career a few years ago. I have achieved (H&S) the NEBOSH General Certifcate and the NEBOSH Fire Safety & Risk Management Certificate and hold TechIOSH status.

I am currently employed as an accident investigator and would really appreciate some advice from the wealth of experience that is obviously out there. I am about to embark on further study in my final 2 years, and would like advice on the 3 routes I see benefit to, these being:
The NEBOSH Lvl 6 Diploma in OS & H, The British Safety Council Lvl 6 Diploma in OS & H or the NVQ Lvl 4 in OS & H.

I am aware of the requirements of each, but would like some advice on the advanatages or disadvantages of each and how they would be viewed when it becomes time to job search.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Nigel

I believe the reality is that the NEBOSH Diploma carries more weight with potential employers. It is still viewed (rightly or wrongly) as the gold standard.

The NEBOSH Diploma has a lower pass rate, so you will need to assess your capabilities and also how the study approach fits in with your personal life.

This being said there are still people (like me) who look at all round competence, enthusiasm and potential, alongside having the qualifications in place.

Good luck

Ian

Nigel,

I was in your position myself 6 or so years ago send me an email and we can discuss off forum but i fortunately made some right decisions, but could have done with having a little bit of guidance when I was in your situation to enhance my chances of doing the right things.

Seems to me you are doing better than I though as you are asking the right people for advice on this forum. I was ex RE.

Regards

Dave

It is impossible to say whether the exam route or NVQ would suit you without spending time talking to you and understanding what real under pinning knowledge and experience you already possess. Assuming that you already carry a plethora of knowledge and experience and have an archive of specific documentation relating to past years then the NVQ level 4 (Ento standard is same as level 6 diploma with two additional units included over and above the diploma) may well suit you; this will be confirmed by a good quality provider and will for a fixed price allow you approximately 18 months to complete it. After that time fees may become negotiable, some may not operate this way however.

The NVQ route is a difficult one, there are many areas to satisfy your assessor that you do, that you fully understand, and that you can supply the necessary evidence for; I suppose I have to agree that the diploma is probably the unofficial 'gold' standard and it is what employers generally look for, advertisements are however beginning to recognise the positive value of an NVQ route, and recent advertising in our wonderful SHP supports this statement.

The writer here is convinced that the the diploma by Nebosh, the diploma by BSC or the NVQ (in no order) are all a superb route to better oneself academically speaking; only you know at this stage which would be the preferred method for you Nigel.

If you would like to talk about in greater depth, I make the offer for you to telephone me and I will set aside whatever time you need to help in any way I can; email me if you wish; in the meantime all the best to you for your future career.

I studied and work in Australia as a Safety Advisor, and would like to work in the UK. I currently hold an Advanced Diploma in Occupational Safety, Health and Training. Is my qualification recognised in the UK.
