Starting out in H&S with over 20 yrs experience in construction

I have over 20 years experience in construction having been employed as a steel erector. As I wanted a career change and progression I entered Higher Education and gained a BSc(Hons) with Education degree this was followed by achieving a City & Guilds in Computer Applications and I have now acquired the Nebosh General Certificate. I am now looking forward to working in H&S. Unfortunately it appears that without H&S experience I am being overlooked. Can anyone out there give me some advice and point me in the right direction please
Dave

With your history you must have health and safety experience. It is down to how you communicate the experience you have.
Can you pull out and highlight specific health and safety skills and experience from your career so far. Skills like assessing risk, putting in safe methods of work, inspecting sites, liaison and influencing site personnel. I am sure the list could be very long.
I am happy to critique your CV if you think it will help.
All the best
Ian

David,
Firstly, well done, I went down the same type of route. It can be tough to get the break but what did it for me was going through the Yellow Pages & telephoning around contractors and consultants. After a lot of persevering I got the big break but unfortunately it was only P/t- I ended up having to start up a consultancy to make the most of the extra hours.
Get your c.v. into a few agencies as well.
Like all other jobs it's getting your foot in the door but once you're in the ball/opportunities start coming in.
Best of Luck,
Lee

you must have been 'inducted' on many occasions -use that experience to add to your profile -
look at all the sites etc that you have worked on and prise out more info
noting your background you probably have more [proper] experience than many a builder so highlight it

thanks for your speedy replies sorry I haven't been on sooner but I've been away for the weekend and I've just got back. I am based in Sheffield South Yorkshire but I've worked all around the UK plus France and Switzerland in my time as a steel erector so I am prepared to travel

I am looking for safety cover on a site in Birmingham City Centre. It is for 2 weeks minimum starting 21st April and possibly a week or more after. The site is already set up and method statements and risk assessments approved. It is a good site with pleasant surroundings and a office available for administrative purposes.
I am in urgent need of cover as I have another site I need to go to and my partner is taking a holiday break. This could lead to further opportunities as we already have several companies enquiring after our services. We also look for weekend cover, night cover all periodically.
This would be a great opportunity for you to gain experience and join our network of professionals. If you are not interested or know of someone who would please respond to:email
spencert@blackberry.orange.co.uk or Spencer on 07932073578
