I realise I am in the same boat as a lot of other people. Im aware that I may be looking in the wrong places for employment and not really sure where to go from here.

I completed my NEBOSH certificate (self funded) in April 04 to try to enter into H&S.I got my current job as H&S assistant in Oct 04. I completed my NVQ level 3 in Oct 06. I was told by my employer that I would be able to progress to the level 4 once the level 3 was complete.

However, my company is considering partial/complete closure and so I am at risk of redundancy.Over the past 2-3 months I have been applying for H&S vacancies through H&S specialist agencies, general employment agencies the job centre adn looking on employment websites. However I seem to either not have the experience required or the level of qualification required (level 4 / construction exp and cert!).
The environment I currently work in is manufacturing / warehouse / offices - dealing with hazardous waste, transport, machinery etc.
I live in the north west of England, can anyone point me in the right direction? I was thinking I may be best to self fund for the diploma or level 4 before I am made redundant (although this could be as soon as late summer, or to maybe self fund to do the construction certificate?
Although I am unsure if the construction certificate is very similar to the general certificate I have already done, and would be redoing work for a lot of money?

Any suggestions are welcome

Firstly, sorry to hear that you may be made redundant; not a pleasant prospect and one of which I wish you all the best with. I was made redundant 32 years ago, for me it was the best thing that could have ever happened, it is therefore not always the crisis that you may expect it to be.

Back to the issue at hand; If you seriously consider the Construction cert, then if you can hang on till later into 2007 when a conversion course will be available and with the recent General you will be eligible, this will reduce the cost for you and also mean you are not covering the units you have previously passed on.

With respect to the diploma, one of the difficulties for you will be exactly how much experience and knowledge you have, even on the basis that you take and pass the dip, prospective employers/agencies will be looking for a minimum term of years in experience; if you think about construction in this instance you would be wise to look for position to start getting the experience, and yes, I am fully aware of the 'chicken and egg' situation that many people find themselves in; sadly I can't answer that one for you but there are breaks to be had.

Do start actively marketing yourself, you will find as a member of IOSH you will receive the SHP our monthly magazine which has a cross section of available jobs in; in addition have a look at the following link which explains all that you need for SHP4jobs.

I sincerely wish you well for the future and hope all works out for you; remember to look for positives as a result of possible redundancy rather than negatives, having a positive outlook will be the best way forward for you.

Any chance you could be really cheeky and ask if the employer might consider a course for you at their expense on the grounds you would be very grateful for their proactive approach to impending redundancy? Just a thought, they can only say yes or no!

All the best

Thanks for that CFT, I didnt realise that there was a conversion course on the cards for the construction route.
I am currently completing the application for Tech IOSH so hopefully that will earn me some points if comes through.
I very much doubt cheekiness will get me anywhere with the employer but will try it……. They argue over £3! So doubt they will give me any more than they have to. Thanks for the help and info re: construction
