I started doing SHE in the RN 6 yrs. I am Nebosh Certifcate qualified and I am currently undertaking the NEBOSH National Diploma. The problem I am facing is trying to find work. While Health & Safety is the same in both civilian street and the military and cannot find an employer who is willing to acknowledge my experience or even give me a chance in a junior position. Does anybody know of an employer who has previously employed ex forces in safety advisor roles or any employer who would consider starting me in an assistants position?

Many thanks

Euan

Hi Euan,

I think where you are going wrong is where you are stating that H&S is the same in both military and civillian life. They aren't!
Civvy employers want to see how you would consider the commercial aspects of H&S. If you tell someone to do something in the military they will do it, if you have the same approach in civvy street you are likely to be greeted with a volley of unpleasant words.

you need to look at your current skills and qualities within the military and think how they would apply in a commercial environment, difficult to do when your still in the service.

If you want, I'll have a look at your CV and see if i can give you a few pointers.

Try PSN they are screaming out for ex navel personnel, there is a link for their jobs website below. PSN were KBR until last year when they had a management buy out, and they are part of haliburton i think. They are very interested in ex navel personnel as they have a hand in the new super carriers when/if they are built.

Hi Euan,

I served for 27 years in RN and left as you did with a NEBOSH General certificate over 10 years ago. I managed to get job with Serco Denholm Ltd who provide Marine Services to the RN. I progressed to tech SP and then did my Diploma Part 2, advancing to RSP and now CMIOSH.

There are differences between service and Limited Company requirements, however no one is usually more flexible that ex services. Sometimes this is not recognised until you are in the job.

Serco advertise online so why not post your details to them, visit www.serco.com and I believe they have a link with regards to employment.

As a matter of interest I now work for an international shipping company as UK Regional HSEQ Manager that manages oil and gas tankers throughout the world. This was always my end goal but i will be looking for more in the future with current employer.

I know where you are coming from I am ex forces (28 yrs). What employers and clients alike are looking for is your experience. Let me expand briefly its a bit of a double edge weapon if you have experience they will scan your certificates, if you do not have the experience they are unlikely to view your certificates. You need to gather experience even in short stints such as I am offering. I am always looking for back-up on different sites.

I am looking for safety cover on a site in Birmingham City Centre. It is for 2 weeks minimum starting 21st April and possibly a week or more after. The site is already set up and method statements and risk assessments approved. It is a good site with pleasant surroundings and a office available for administrative purposes.

I am in urgent need of cover as I have another site I need to go to and my partner is taking a holiday break. This could lead to further opportunities as we already have several companies enquiring after our services. We also look for weekend cover, night cover all periodically.

This would be a great opportunity for you to gain experience and join our network of professionals. If you are not interested or know of someone who would please respond to:email
spencert@blackberry.orange.co.uk or Spencer on 07932073578
