Hi All,

Having only just joined IOSH as a Tecnician Member, I am now looking at the next step in my development.

I would like to obtain GradIOSH status and have secured funding from my employer.

However there are 3 different routes that I can use to obtain the desired qualification level, the three being - Nebosh National Diploma, NVQ 4 or the British Safety council Diploma.

As there is a lot of experienced practitioners on the forum, could you please give me your advice on which route to take.

Many Thanks

I can't address the dip route as I took the NVQ 4 to my 'grad' status. With respect to that particular route it will be a consideration if it is right for you. As a 'tech' member you will already have demonstrated a certain level of competence and if you can supply all the necessary evidence and satisfy a quality NVQ assessor then it may well be the route for you. I recommend you talk to a NVQ level 4 provider and then see after a consultation if this particular way forward is for you.

I can't comment in any great depth on the diploma as clearly I have not taken it; if you feel that your knowledge needs taking to another level for you to progress then this could be the way for you; BSC or Nebosh is personal choice and I anticipate further advice arriving bestowing upon you the individual benefits of each. The diploma route will be the most expensive monetary speaking; time wise possibly the NVQ 4.

Whatever route you take, I wish you every success.

I agree with CFT. I also think the way you study should be taken into consideration. I personally took the Diploma route and found this successful, mainly due I believe to the way I prefer to study. I have colleagues who have under gone study at Nottingham Trent for their Diploma, NVQ 4 and also BSC and they found it successful.
CFT is right with regards to time with the NVQ route as you need to provide detailed portfolio of evidence, with the other routes it is exam based along with assignments.

Which ever route you decide to take I wish you every success.

I Passed the NEBOSH National Diploma last year, so I can only comment on this route.

The NEBOSH Dip is a very intensive but enjoyable course which is time consuming, not just during tutorials, but also the vast amount of personal time required to complete assignments and revision work to achieve the results.

When I was planning which route to go down I looked at the NVQ's and BSC, but because I had The NEBOSH Cert I decided to stay with the NEBOSH National Diploma.

Considering I had very few qualifications when i left school it goes to show what can be achieved.

At the end of the day, it's down to personal choice which way to go and finding a good training provider will definitely help.

In the past 12 Months when reading comments on this forum there have been numerous occasions when NEBOSH has been slated for low pass rates. NVQ 4 has been attacked for being too difficult and recently BSC diploma for like NEBOSH having a low pass rate.

All things considered this shows that all three of these qualifications are to an equal high standard.

One last thing, I have now embarked on the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma via distance learning and with out having regular tutorials I am finding it very hard going, so I would recommend this route for the National Dip.

I wish you well on which ever route you decide on.

Mark

I have just about finished my NVQ4 and I think it is the hardest thing I have ever done, and I'm not stupid I have a BSc (Hons) degree in biology and chemistry. I think the choice as to which way to go is a very individual one, I think I would have been better to do the diploma as I am very much an academic type, I prefer to be given the information and learn it, reasearch it and apply it (I apologise if this is not a true description of the diploma!) rather than interpret criteria and prove I have done it. Also with the NVQ make sure you have a job which means that you have acess to a wide range of policies, procedures etc etc. I work in a huge College and as a result some aspects of health and safety are dealt with under other departments which meant that when it came to proving my proficiency in them, it was hard. Also there is a lot of proving you have implemented new policies etc, in my position all I can do is make recommendations. It very much depends on your job. If you are doing your NVQ4 it suggests you aren't a chartered member yet some of the things you have to prove you have completed are things that I don't have the power to do, in my role as a non chartered member. It's just what I have found in the last year of doing it - others may not agree. I don't feel I am making myself very clear but I just recommend you look into both thoroughly before making a decision.

AD- if you do a search on this topic you will find it has been raised many times before.

I have done both and they are like "chalk" and "cheese"- you will get many people quite het up trying to convince you that "my way was the best" but it really comes down to you as an individual- their are many things to consider- what suits you/your lifestyle, whether you can allocate whole days/weeks to studying, what work you are doing- can you provide the proof of involvement at NVQ level that you need across such a wide spectrum from your existing/recent work? etc etc..
All I can say is it's something well worth the effort you put in and making the decision itself should give you a feeling of satisfaction/accomplishment

Hi all,

Many thanks to all that have responded.

After reading the threads on this subject and speaking with most of the professionals that I currently work with I have decided to take the British Safety Council Diploma.

Only time will tell if it is the right decision but its studied in week blocks with assignemts and exams to sit. So the timings tend to fit around the busy young family that I have.

Once again thank you for the feedback you have given me on this issue.

Fingers crossed and here's to obtaining gradIOSH.

Cheers
