Posted By Clare Gabriel Could someone please start a website, or some such thing where all these people who want to start a health and safety consultancy business can go and get information? We repeatedly get requests for information and the same individuals repeatedly and tirelessly respond with the same information.
For those who need this information at different times they have to trawl through past threads and the answers are nearly always the same.
Maybe somewhere already exists that someone could recommend so we do not induce a WRULD in the subscribers.
thank you

Posted By Simon Edwards Hi Clare
As a web developer your post caught my eye. I cannot provide any content for such a site but could provide a suitable framework. What do you have in mind specifically for this website?

I have been/am still going through this process. It certainly takes time and a great deal of effort to get a business off the ground.
I am contemplating developing a blog. This could include tips, trials and tribulations. What I have learnt in the last twelve months. Perhaps a community/network of people who have or who are thinking about taking the plunge?
Do people think this is a good idea. Please respond or email direct.
Cheers
Ian

Posted By Simon Edwards Will a blog be comprehensive enough for what is required?
What specifically is required?

Posted By Clare Gabriel I was hoping there could be a site where those of us who have gone through the process - without the restrictions that IOSH have to put on us (but understandably so)can record: - good, bad and ugly experiences with insurance companies (PI, ELCI etc) - where advertising has/has not worked, - associate work - again good bad experiences and any other vital information for the self employed
Clearly there would have to be some moderation - but so many people seem to be setting up that a one stop shop is clearly required - can I patent this idea?!!!!!!!!!

Posted By Simon Edwards It doesn’t sound like an idea you can patent, but you could be the one to start the one stop shop?
Would this be a website where several experienced professionals are updating the content and sharing their just their own experiences, or a place for anyone associated with the field to share their experiences. Perhaps with the right moderators, a combination of the two?
My initial thoughts are for suitable website with perhaps a blog and forum.

Posted By Alexander Falconer I hate to be a spoilsport........! I was in the throes of looking to go out on my own (still am) and foundthis site to be a very valuable source of information http://www.businesslink....layer?topicId=1073858805Whilst it is aimed at anyone setting up a business, it is still a very good starting point

Posted By Simon Edwards The Business Link site is indeed a great site with some quality information, i have used many times myself.
Is the idea we have here so far for a website focused on 'health and safety consultancy'? And one that has more user generated content?

Posted By Clare Gabriel Yes I think it is. Business Link are excellent as are the many local government run programmes for business start up but my thoughts were solely for EHS professionals who are looking for a starting point and where those of us who have been through the pain can share our valuable experience - good and bad so others may not fall into some of the traps we did - like joining some of those awful pyramid selling breakfast clubs!!!
I would love to be involved but have no know how on how to set up such a website am technically a dunce - it takes all my concentration to do my CPD!!!!

Posted By Simon Edwards well the technical aspects can be handled by someone such as myself. the question might be, who has, or do you have, the time and resources to manage such a site/project?

I am particularly interested in the advertising side at the moment. I'm looking at companies who advertise in local journals and phoning them to determine how they have evaluated the benefits. Anyone with any thoughts on advertising, I would very much like to hear from you. Is emailing still lawful and is this better than cold calling or sending in a hard copy. I would really appreciate any input. How did you put together your marketing strategy? What worked, what didn't work?

Posted By Clare Gabriel Chris, I was lucky and really didn't have to advertise as I had made very many contacts along the way who were 'kind' enough to pass on work. I gave it a try a the start but was not cut out to sell my soul!! I have a number of friends in the business who have done very well out of the yellow pages- both the book and Yell.com. Also the FSB produces an annual journal of members which another friend has picked quite a lot of business up in.
Again here are good example where this information should be logged. come on safety techies - take the plunge - set up a site and we will contribute I have no doubt!!!
