I have been involved in health and safety for over eight years and am a technician member.
My experience and background is predominantley Warehousing and distribution Management but I have had some experience in the food manufacturing and Telecommunications industry.
I have been unable to find permenant full time employment in the North West and would appreciate any advice.
I have recently completed the NEBOSH Fire and Risk Assessment Certificate and the NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
I thought this would give me a head start above all others that are newly qualified NEBOSH General Certificate holders.
Only I am finding that all positions advertised - even as low as Administrator are requiring a minimum of diploma level.
Even though the courses I have completed to date have been self funded.
I am unable to fund the Diploma and gain the qualification.
How can I gain full time, permenant employment and be taken seriously?
I have over eight years experience and working knowledge but not to diploma level!
I have applied for numerous positions and the feedback i have obtained is - excellent knowledge, excellent qualifications, would be more suitable to a management position.
So I apply for a management or advisor position and the feed back is: excellent knowledge, excellent qualifications but not got diploma be more suited to a co-ordinator or administrator position.
Please advise as I am hoping not to become disillusioned in my chosen profession !!

Hi Lindsey,
Have you raised that you're more than willing to undertake the diploma (possibly in your own time outwith work) for your new potential employers if they can assist with the funding and you'd be willing to accept a training agreement?
(caution training agreements i.e company pays tuition of £3000 but you pay it back if you leave before 2 years are up etc, some also come with a hidden clause that you will be taken on for probably less than you're worth and pay rises over the next 2 years may be minimal. Negotiate for some additional days or time to study though)
dont lose heart, keep trying, you are picking up invaluable interview experience at the moment and this can pay off in the long run for the right opportunity.

Don't lose heart. I only have the NEBOSH General and Construction and have been in Health & Safety for about 8 years to. I'm currently a Health & Safety Manager in a Warehouse for a large distribution company, and i have had a few safety roles prior to this.
I worked for a consultancy for a few years and i found that was a great way to gain experience. A lot of companies will still take experience over qualifications, so keep trying!
Look on sites like www.totaljobs.com and get on a few recruitment agency books, shirlyparsons specialise in safety jobs.
If you can show your passion for safety and get that across in your CV and then interview, I'm sure you will do well!

Nearly all jobs advertised put that they need a diploma or "must hold NEBOSH" sometimes this is becuase the person advertising it dosnt even know what it is.
Obviously there are going to be some jobs which require a diploma as a minimum and some which likely dont, you should be able to judge for yourself by the responsabilities which are involved and size of company and risks associated etc...
My advice is, dont be disconcerted by a lack of response, in all likelyhood it has nothing to do with you not having a diploma unless you are applying for very high level jobs, yes obviously it would help, but as you say you have more qualifications and experience than most newly qualified Gen Cert holders and that experience, your CV and how you come accross in the interview will count for a lot.

I am sure your experience will be of benefit to many companies, if they could but see past the 'diploma'
Have you tried seeing a recruitment specialist for advice on writing your CV. The CV is the door opener so getting across what you have to offer on this 'bit of paper' is essential. Once you have got to interview your experience would then come through.
I wish you luck in your search for a a suitable position.

I have taken on board and will keep in mind when completing future applications and interviews.
I have recently had my CV reviewed as part of a redundancy package but I am feeling more and more aware as to it's effectiveness or lack of.
