Hi
I am currently waiting on my NEBOSH Cert results in august before i have a daunting choice. I am currently work shadowing a local H&S firm with view of employment. I have studyed up to HND level in software, but most of my experience has been in sales for a specialised Electrical firm.

Due to family reasons, I have spent the past 3 years working in the family Construction business. From here I have gained an interest in H&S and this is why I am studying for the Cert.

The question is do i stay with this firm, who only do Audits. Or do i try to gain further experience with another company.

The firm is offering below par pay and benefits. The questions are if I decide to refuse the job offer what should i do next? What sort of role could i apply for? [with lack of experience]
I am keen to further my career and see moving for work as no problem. Any advice would be great! email: oggy_oggy_oggy@hotmail.com

Although the company may not be offering what you regard as enough, try and stick with it for now to get the all important experience that should make moving later on easier.

I agree with Pauls advice. Stick with it, gain the experience you can, as it will make you much easier to employ in say 12 months time.

I agree with the others, stick with it and get experience. I would say the pay is low as this is, after all, only at trainee level. As soon as possible try to get on the Diploma course as that is the professional training, the Cert. is really only a general interest course or introductory level for those wishing to go further. If they will fund the Dip. even better and that could be regarded as payment in kind.
Good luck

Hi Ciaran

You should be anticipating a cut in package since you will be less valuable as a new start trainee H&S professional than presumably you are to your family business.

The question as to what constitutes "below par pay and benefits" will depend, amongst other things, on your prospective employer's target clients [including taking into account how much value your employer would perceive in your construction experience]and where you are based - e.g. price tag much higher in London than most other areas.

If you wish to divulge what you are being offered, we could give you constructive feedback. Suggest any such information be off this site e.g. by emailing your respondents, with an indication of where you are based.

Good luck, Peter
