Hello all

I have been reading what appears to be very informative information regarding careers & study advice for people considering careers in Health & Safety.

I am a Residential Property Manager looking to add to the qualifications in order to meet the ever increasing demands placed on properties in regard to Health & Safety and specific Fire Safety.

My plan, in so much as I have one so far is to study the NEBOSH General Certificate then the NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate then the NEBOSH General Diploma.

From what I have ready this would give me the necessary qualifications to be considered competent (& qualified)in advising in both fire safety and general site/contractors health & safety.

I already have the NEBOSH General Certificate text book and am likely to choose the ACT E-Learning course as a study route for the first stage.

My questions would be - is my understanding of the qualification route correct & does this all sound sensible?

Any advise or comments would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Angela

Thanks Mark

It's my own business so I have a vested interest in what I study!

The syllabuses all seem a little confusing on first reading & I'm trying to achieve the desired result in the fastest & most cost effective way!

Kind regards

Angela

Just remember that actually having all these qualifications doesn't necessary mean you are competent, experience of working in H&S directly is helpful in applying the knowledge you have gained through study.

Hello Angela

It may well be that the general cert and fire cert may well be sufficient for you in your present employment guise; I can't be totally sure as a residential property managers position can be quite varied.

You are correct that the qualifications obtained would eventually enable you to advise and become competent; time and experience of course are equally important as qualifications and this should be considered.

Yes, it all sounds sensible, but be prepared to give up a fair share of every day life if you intend to go forwards after the certificates and take the diploma; the jump is substantial to say the least and one should bear this in mind; if your intention is to move away from your present position and develop a stronger H&S commitment then I would advocate you do consider the diploma, for now however, do the certificates and take a breather to consider your next move.

Good luck and best wishes

Thanks for the comments Tracey & CFT.

I should perhaps have made it clear I have many years experience of health & safety relating to the management of commercial and residential property - I have just never thought about studying & gaining the relevant qualifications!

Health & Safety is only a part of my role but an increasingly important one hence the desire to study & gain some relevant qualifications to back up what I know & to learn about the subject more thoroughly - there's always more to learn in any field in my view.

Thanks for the comments about study time it's been a while since I last studied & I swore after my last set of exams I'd never sit another one!
