Posted By Gillian Lloyd I would be greatful for any advice re the worth (and best way) to become CMIOSH. I am currently TECH IOSH. For the past two years I have been a freelance trainer and consultant undertaking H&S work. I am fairly busy but feel the need to gain CMIOSH (although no-one has actually asked for this). Has anyone got an opinion as to whether this upgrade is necessary (although I would like to do so as it must improve your knowledge-no?) and maybe more importantly what is the best way for a self employed person to do so? All advice greatfully recieved.

Posted By David Daniels Gillian As a former consultant and trainer I would strongly recommend upgrading to CMIOSH. Depending on the type of consultancy work you are doing your competence may be of major significance not only to your clients but also to the HSE. CMISOH is generally the accepted norm for this. I have just completed the new NEBOSH Diploma which will get me to CMIOSH via Grad IOSH and experience, however you can also do it via certain MSC courses which are recognised routes. I guess the decision which route you take depends on how much time and money you can invest but I would certainly recommend doing something.

Posted By CFT I agree Gillian; you would benefit greatly. As you have much experience of the industry you may find the NVQ level 4 a suitable route for yourself. I feel certain you would not struggle to provide sufficient evidence and answer the questions competently of the assessor. With this route you would enter an 'initial professional development' phase which would last for two years, you would be expected to continue with CPD, complete the open assessment, finish with a 'peer review interview' and progress to chartered. Each route varies but the concepts are similar. Highly recommend you to proceed further, and ultimately achieve chartered status. All the best, whichever you decide upon, if indeed you do. CFT

Posted By Anthony Slinger Hi Gillian, It is good to see that you are still “at it”! I would agree with both David and CFT that CMIOSH is the way to go, however, without wanting to re-start the age old Diploma v NVQ war, it now really depends on which route you want to take to get there. As previously discussed on this forum there are pros and cons for both. To quote the IOSH membership info “Chartered status is recognised throughout the business world as a shorthand for the first class professional. Your new position marks you out as an experienced and competent health and safety practitioner at the top of your discipline.” Not going to argue with that! Anthony

Posted By Gillian Lloyd Thanks for your responses. Looks like I need to knuckle down and get to CMIOSH status. Want to do quickly as I hate courses that last for years. Any suggestions? Anthony - yes still at it. My computer crashed a few months ago and I lost all my email contacts so glad I've got yours back again. Gillian

Posted By Seano I don't think there is a "quick" way to do it. If you complete a diploma course, these can take 1/2 years. Then you will have to register as a graduate member, then there is a 2 year IPD cycle. Even after that there is no guarantee of gaining chartered status. Could take you a minimum of 3 years or could take longer.
