Good morning all,
I am CMIOSH with 9 years experience as an EHS manager in Newspaper production(4.5 years)and Train maintenance (4.5 years)I also have 9 + years experience as a safety inspector in the petrochemical industry. I will be due for retirement in April 2008 and have a dilemma, I am not ready to hang up my safety boots. I can apply under the age discrimination legislation to remain in post but this is not guaranteed and would mean full time work.I would like to consider part time associate work. The question this morning is, What opportunities are available for part time work ? Any input gratefully received,

best regards
Phil Roberts CMIOSH

Philip,

Why not go self-employed, offering sfaety consultant services? With CMIOSH you are already ahead in the game. Once you have a few customers you can plan your own time and effectively be working part-time.

If you will have enough money to get by with for a while then I recommend this option. If you are unsure how to get started check out the Business Link websites, and your local Chamber of Commerce, they may have an Enterprise Club website, who will be offering free workshops on setting up a business explaining how to register a business, NI, income tax, marketing, business plans, bank accounts, claimable expenses etc.

John, thanks for the input, I have answered you by e-mail,

Alan, again thanks for the input,
I have spoken to a couple of agencies but I am not yet available to work normal hours, I would be available for evenings or weekends, just to get a foot in the door if any agencies are reading this, my e-mail is live if you log on,
best regardsa

I am a bit saddened reading your post; when I retire, I will fill every minute of my day with things I like to do (fishing, mostly).

Hey if you still want to do safety stuff do it for free voluntarily! (Thought not!)

Seriously though, good luck, take up a hobby, leave the safety work for people who still need to earn a crust!

Philip

I don't suppose you fancy passing back some of that knowledge and experience to those hungry for it by-way-of teaching?

I have stood in on many occasions in the past and I have to be honest and say if the money was a bit more realistic I would do it tomorrow permanently, its fun, darn satisfying (when they all pass) dealing with the individual idiosyncrasies of the students, to be honest with you I cant imagine anything more satisfying than helping to sculpt the future H&S aficionados of this country.

Good Luck

CFT,
I do have some experience at teaching further education but not H&S. I also spend a lot of my working time carrying out H&S training and would love to teach if the opportunity arose,

thanks for the good wishes,

best regards
Phil
