Posted By Andrew Brown Entertainment is a big area and tends to be divided with Clients, producers and contractors specialising in particular areas. E.g. rock and roll, theatre, conference, outdoor public events, film & TV, private events, corporate promotion to name some of them. I have worked in entertainment both in my previous life as a lighting tech and since coming into Health and Safety. I feel there are a lot of similarities with construction e.g. Structures, multiple contractors, lots of work at height, plant, transport and temporary site infrastructure. There are also significant differences; typically much shorter projects from a few hours to a few weeks from start to finish and deadlines are immovable. Crowd safety and getting an entertainment license is generally the prime safety concern of any promoter you may be working for on a public event. You also have to consider the artists. Crowd safety is a specialist area and crosses over with security and stewarding. Not only do you need to advise on site layout, design and programming but you may be called upon to manage developing incidents. I once did a political rally in Brighton with 5000 demonstrators, I had about 30 stewards, a high vis jacket and a two way radio, the Policeman working with me had a Tactical Advisor, Evidence gathering team and 200 Bobbies standing by in vans with full riot gear, but yours truly was 'in charge' until the Policeman decided otherwise. Thankfully nothing went off on that occasion. The hours are long so your day rate may be for 20 hours not 10. Also expect to be working weekends all summer for the outdoor events market. A lot of work is London centric as well. You could try these organisations for ideas and companies. www.psa.org.uk www.noea.org.uk www.whitebook.co.uk Most main librarys have the whitebook as well Hope that gives you a few ideas.
