Hi all!
Xmas is looming and so is submission of my CPD summary! OMG! What goes where and what i can use as CPD is totally confusing me especially when the guidance on IOSH relates to the NEW online version of CPD - you follow? (i'm on the old paper system of CPD)
My question is simply what can i use as CPD? I know i can use Professional Seminars (IOSH Branch Seminars) to which i have as much as possible...is there any maximum here? I haven't been to any Branch meetings however...so can't claim 1 point for each meeting...Sheesh!
As for reviewing articles...does this mean i can pick an article from SHP and review it? What about my daily work - inspecting & auditing for H&S compliance and best practice, and producing a risk assessments for a variety of different workplaces? Is there anything i can pull from there?
Any advice will be of so much help to me as i'm completely at a loss - i need some sort of structure, with LOTS OF EXAMPLES of what could go in which section (A to G) not just 'CPD is person specific'.

Do you ever have to review & update policies/ procedures?
Often there are points to be gained here for researching a subject as well as creating the document.
Further points can then be made by implementing the policy/ procedure and running training for managers or staff.
Have you made any innovative changes to the audit process, e.g. introduced new methods or documentation? There may be points available for this.
As long as you can justify the points you award (and they are auditable) then it shouldn't be a big issue.
Also, try and get in touch with your local IOSH branch, they will probably have someone who can mentor you through the whole process.

....the things you need to do to keep up to date in relation to your work.
I've claimed points [justifiably] for investigating legislation and standards in places such as Ukraine, and Jersey.
Once you get an understanding of what is self-development it is very easy to legitimately claim as CPD points. Over 7 cycles I have averaged over 35 points per cycle, without trying to record CPD too hard.

A couple of things that might help:
Where you put your points is not critical in terms of recording as many activities cross the boundaries specified. But in brief
Section A - formal training programmes normally with assessment
Section B- Attendance at any formal seminar/conference type event at 2 per day
Section C- Publications that you have written for or contributed to. This can include reviews of books or articles that have been formally published.
Section D - Attendance at meetings such as IOSH branches/specialist groups although any internal safety meetings or other organisations meetings can be included here.Up to 8 maximum
Section E - Things that have helped your professional competence development that are not health and safety specific.
Section F - Workplace developments such as policies that you have written or training course that you deliver Up to 5 per initiative, with 15 maximum (although you should record beyond this if you have done more)
Section G is not normally used as most things fall in the other section.
Also give our helpline a call and Fiona, Kayleigh, Melissa or Mandip their manager will be able to talk you through this. It's not hard so don't worry about it too much!
