Posted By Rob Campbell Hi, I'm currently working in H&S/IMS and studying for my MSc with a view to working in H&S in Canada after i've graduated. My H&S work experience to date (5yrs+) is mainly in educational establishments and with utilities/construction planning. Could anyone advise me on areas i would be best reading up on that are specific to Canada, or perhaps areas that have a more bouyant job perspectives in the "great white north". I have family over in Alberta and they're telling me that the Oil/Gas industry is massive and my most likely target, but i'd like as much advice as possible. Especially from anyone who's works/worked there. Thanks for reading i look forward to your comments.

Posted By paul cormack Rob Employment markets in BC and Alberta are buoyant just now, and there are significant opportunities in the Calgary area. Suggest you monitor the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering website www.csse.org, or the Calgary Chapter employment site - http://www.cssecalgary.com/employment.html Ontario and Quebec are also great markets but, for oil industry assignments anywhere in Canada, the dayrate can be less than half European or Middle East locations (or I would have headed back home long ago). I know a few people who have re-located to Maritime Canada with ExxonMobil etc or to Calgary/Fort MacMurray, who have returned a few months later due to remote assignments, extreme cold weather, heavy snowstorms, Atlantic fog. Personally, I'd suggest Calgary or Vancouver but they do appear to be considering rotational (30 days, then extended leave) assignments to the oilsands areas. The CSSE can help, though, and family in the area can be great support. Good luck with it. Regards/Paul (MSc CMIOSH Chartered FCIPD, also CSSE Professional Member)
