Posted By Anthony Whittaker Hi, I am currently serving in the RAF and due to leave in November '08. My aim after leaving is to start a career in health ad safety and have decided to take a NEBOSH General Cert course for my resettlement training. However, after researching a little deeper I am now wondering which course would give me a better chance of employment post-RAF. If anyone could offer any advice on which course would be better, either the general cert or construction cert I would be most grateful. Thankyou for taking the time to read this and I look forward to any advice you may have. Anthony Whittaker

Posted By Exdeeps Anthony, As an ex submariner may I offer this advice. The Nat Cert is a good place to start. You should also look at your service skills and try to understand what they are in civilian terms. Two reasons, it might identify a business area you had not thought about and also so that you can produce a CV that a civvie looking to recruit can understand. Ask as many people as you can to critique the CV, both service and civilian and modify it as appropriate. If you like I'll have a look and give you my opinion, Cheers, Jim

Posted By mrs.seed I would suggest that you also look at the long term training and examination requirements to be a H&S professsional - its a long haul that will require dedication for a good few years. sarah

Posted By Anthony Whittaker Jim, Sarah, Thankyou both for your very welcome advice. I have had many people look at my CV but none seem to have given much constructive feedback so would be very grateful if you could take a look at it for me. I fully understand that a career in H&S will take many years, one qualification alone will not be adequate to base a whole career on as in any form of employment. However, is a General Certificate enough to get a foot in the door so to speak? I admit that I am lacking experience and have taken steps to at least gain some prior knowledge of what I can expect through shadowing various H&S officers in the RAF. With regards to dedicating myself to a new career, having recently turned 30, I feel that I am still in a very good position to commit to and progress (if allowed!) within the Health and Safety environment. Thank you both again for your replies. Anthony

Posted By Clive Lowery Anthony, I left the Army in Novemebr 2003 afetr 24 years. Started out with the NEBOSH General Certificate and also the Construction Certificate. I can give you the providers details off-line, but you can always look them up in the Quest magazine or via the re-settlement centres. One of the biggest problems you will face is converting what qualifications and experiences you have into something that is comparable to the "Civvy" equivalent. Try not to use abbreviations and keep it simple. A good starting point for this is the CPD folder you were issued a few years ago. It pays to have a few people look at your CV, both ex-military and non-military and I would be willing to have a look and give feedback should you wish. If you get the opportunity, offer your services during re-settlement to a consultancy. Good luck for the future, try and keep us all informed how you progress. If you want any further advice/help etc send me an email and I'll help where I can Best wishes Clive
