Posted By Edele A Hi I am a Health and Safety Consultant, CMIOSH, as a consultant i have worked in different sectors but i am primarily involved in the construction industry, I am just wondering whether its easy to switch into manufacturing/healthcare etc I dont come from a construction background per se but i have applied my knowledge to the industry, i have a Degree in H&S and the course director emphasises that graduates could work in a range of industries, In general, what are employers opinions on this?

Posted By Pete Longworth In my view, there are a number of core skills, that are interchangeable whatever the industry. Things like manual handling, DSE, risk assessment, etc etc . Obviously in any industry there will be areas that are specific to that industry eg petrochemicals, nuclear etc, but I would say that as long as you know your limitations, and have a good grounding in the common areas, then with an open mind and a willingness to learn you should find the transition relatively painless.

Posted By Andrew M In the last 2 years I have moved from telecoms to printing to man/eng - the move to printing was seemless and had no problems. However, the move to man/eng has been a steep learning curve, mainly due to the lack of H&S culture and me having to deal with a completely new environment. However am now getting to grips with it. The top tip I would say:is use your workers experiences and use your union safety reps. Beware of political issues though!
