Posted By maxmillan maddy Hi Guys Is the NEBOSH in Construction Certificate enough to qualify as a cdm co-ordinator? If not what is the recommended course to go on after that. Thanks

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi I would recommend that you read the CDM ACoP regarding competence as it depends on the complexity of the projects. In my opinion the construction certificate in isolation is not adequate to demonstrate competence as a CDM co-ordinator. If this is coupled with significant and demonstratable experience in project design, delivery and management you could argue that it is sufficient; or alternatively if you are working in a team with other people which cover the competency requirements. I'd be interested to hear what others think. All the best Ian

Posted By Mal Hi Max, difficult to answer your query with a simple yes or no, i would suspect at this stage it would be a no. Competence is primarly task based. So as a CDM-C you need the base qualifications (NEBOSH Gen and or NEBOSH Cons, potentially Diploma level), membership of a prof body would be a big help (APS, RICS, RIBA, ICE, etc) as it shows committment to CPD etc and networking skills, you also need an understanding of procurement, design and construction as they happen. Then the task based experience comes in and relates to the project you are trying to win work on, eg: i would consider myself and my team competent to act as CDM-C on most construction projects, however if the project was in a petrochemical factory environment, or a nuclear type establishment then i would question whether we could do the role properly. So probably the simple answer is that ownership of the cons cert alone is certainly not enough to be acting as a CDM-C, but then again i do not know enough about the rest of your background experience and knowledge Max to 'pass judgement'. Best of luck in your endeavours, Mal.

Posted By Merlin Hi I agree with Ian, qualification such as Nebosh Construction give you a good grounding for the understanding of construction safety, experience counts for a lot in the field of CDMc I would suggest that you contact the Association of Project Safety, they will help with your enquiry. In the mean time try to get involved in the design team meeting, looking at drawings and try to identify issues Even after having the right quality for this role there will be no substitute for experience in dealing with the role of a CDMc http://www.associationfo...ectsafety.co.uk/home.php

Posted By Advanced Safety I am CMIOSH and MCIOB (Chartered Builder)with over 20 years construction experience and have recently had two client insurers ask for further details on experience, CPD and past project experience before approving us for the role of CDM-C on their projects. I think that this will definately become more common as the regulations fully settle in. Good luck in your progression.
