Posted By David Jakowyszyn Hello all, In April of this year I’ll be relocating to Plymouth. I’m currently employed as an Environmental Health Technician within the British Army, but I’m in the process of leaving and I’m looking at taking a new job in the Plymouth area. I have a background of managing and supervising safety systems and providing advice and assistance to all levels of staff in a number of challenging environments. My most recent post has involved ensuring compliance of numerous military units with health and safety legislation. My current qualifications/memberships are: HND in Environmental and Occupational Health Tech IOSH AIIRSM In addition, I’m also studying towards the following qualifications: BEng - Open University NEBOSH General Construction Certificate I’m very keen to move across to the civil engineering or construction industry, and I would appreciate if anyone knows of any career openings with local companies or consultancies. Also, I’m interested in any general advice on employers in the Plymouth area and I will also be available to take short practical placements to gain experience in the industry. Thanks for your time; I look forward to your replies All the best Dave

Posted By Exdeeps Dave, the single largest employer in Plymouth is DML who run the dockyard. Might be worth looking them up as there's always stuff going on and with a service background you should fit right in ( if you can take a ribbing from the Navy bods) Jim

Posted By John Caboche Sadly, I have to say that Devon and Cornwall (and Plymouth in particular) is a bit of an employment black hole, especially for people in our profession. Hence the reason that I now live in Swindon (not as bad as people think......) rather than Plymouth. There are jobs down there, but they are few and far between and in all honesty you will need to demonstrate qualifications to Dip/VQ4 level along with relevant experience rather than relying on NEBOSH Cert. The local branch of IOSH however is very active, and is a good place to network. Sorry to be negative, however my point of view is based on 40 years of living in the place.

Posted By David Jakowyszyn Jim, thanks for the advice on DML. I had a look on their website, but they don't list any direct contacts. Does anyone have a contact they could forward me? Thanks

Posted By Bruce Sutherland David suggest exactly what a minister once said - get on bike - DML have a switchboard try it!!! You do need to be aware that there are a significant number of ex forces people down here and for some reason elf and safety seems to be a popular exit profession If you perhaps googled or even yell(ed) health and safety in the area then you would find out who you would need to contact. You do need to be aware that most business will welcome spec applications - agencies are in my opinion not particularly useful and cost the employer a lot of money. Please do not bother applying to us via one. Just so that the message gets out if we took someone on from an agency for £30k then it may cost us up to £10k for the privilege - the simple thing is to do your own leg work and I believe that most employers will be sympathetic - you will also not have the normal issue that the agency sends you for an interview where the employer has specifically said Dip and you only have a cert but live close..........which surprise surprise normally means no job offer and I am not interested in the oh well I can do it argument - if I have a job for a dip then I want a dip - if I will accept some other form of qualification then I will say that (rant over) Politely suggest you also follow up on other people who have offered to advise you on the situation - I have spoken to another poster and at the time you had not taken him up on his offer of advice about employment in the area. Cheers Bruce

Posted By Dave Wilson I cant agree more with Bruce on this. I am miffed that we get cold calls from agencies when we have placed an advert which SPECIFICALLY SAYS NO AGENCIES!! Why do you do it? Also if we ask for a junior H&S with Some experience with NEBOSH Cert or equivalent then do not be surprised if you get knocked back if you do not have this or you are over qualified and been doing H&S Manager for 30 years. You are wasting the prospective employers time and your own time, H&S in an around Devon / Cornwall is thriving and there are a few vacancies now and again and usually loads of applicants with varying qualifications and experience, however because of this prospective employers will be very EXACT in the requirements required and if you do not fit the advertisement you will normally not get passed the CV sifting stage.

Posted By DennisH Sorry I may have misread that, but would you really knock someone back for being over qualified? Some people may just want to get out of the office and back to the "sharp end".

Posted By CFT I see the point quite clearly from Dave and would agree; if it says ' cert qualified for a junior position, then the salary level is hardly likely to be acceptable to a CMIOSH, at the other end if it says' Nebosh cert' and they apply without it then it simply wastes time. I so agree about 'certain' agencies; No means No! !. CFT

Posted By David Jakowyszyn Thanks to all for your replies, I've spoken to a number of agencies and I'm pretty underwhelmed by their response. (One of them saying they'd found me a very good job in York.) Dave, thanks for all the information that you've forwarded, I've sent you a personal e-mail, which i'm hoping will get through as the last one I sent you kept getting bounced. I also sent e-mails off to the companies you suggested, hopefully they have been received as well, including one to Mr Sutherland. I attended the IOSH branch meeting in Plymouth last week and was really impressed by the strong turn out, as well as the excellent CPD talk. I'm planning to attend the next meeting on the 21st of February as well, hopefully to chat to a few more people this time. Thanks again Dave

Posted By Dave Wilson Dennis, If an employer advertises for a Junior H&S position with NEBOSH cert and working towards TechIOSH, why would an employer interview a 55 year old CMIOSH with 35 years experience? So yes they will not get a look in as the salary etc will not reflect what we are willing to pay! On the other hand if an employer is looking for an experienced and qualified Head of HS&E who must be CMIOSH, SpDipEM, if you only have the NEBOSH Cert then do not waste your time. If you have NO qualifications / experience but been on H&S Committee then do not bother AT ALL - Gissa job, I can do that! NO YOU CAN'T! It does my head in as people think this Job is easy, and its not, if you get it wrong someone my be hurt or killed!
