Posted By Victoria Everton You are not alone I am in the same situation. Passed my NEBOSH General Certificate and now can't find a position with it...all saying the same; good qualification, but no experience, even in the most junior roles. Good luck!!!

Posted By Ian Cunningham Justin. Don't lose faith and stick with it. I'm in a similar situation but is a bit more complicated as a tribunal is involved. I put my cv on monster and to be honest, I've had more success getting interviews than I did after registering via agencies. Consider registering with a reputable agency that can secure contract work. It should give you the opportunity to build your knowedge and experience and also allow you to construct a 'customer base' should you decide at a later stage to move in to consultancy. It's something I'm considering if these 2 potential jobs fall at the last post. Regards Ian C

Posted By CW Getting a job in H&S is very much like H&S itself, you just need to keep chipping away. I got myself a copy of SHP and sent my CV to every single email and postal address that was in the publication. I also included a very frank letter explaining that I had very limited experience, basically it was a 'please give me a chance' begging letter. From over 200 CV's sent out that week, I received lots of responses, mainly wishing me luck in my search but I actually got an interview and subsequently offered a job! Previously to that I applied to every single job that I found, I never counted but I would not be surprised if there were another few hundred. It took me over twelve months to get a job in H&S, stick at it, you'll get there. The irony is now, and the main reason I clicked on the careers forum this evening is that there are rumours of redundancy's at my place and as I was the last in...

Posted By Darren (Daz) Fraser Justin Firstly welcome to the H&S world. Getting your 1st position can be very frustrating for all the reasons you have already mentioned, however I will share some of the things I did that helped me, a few years ago. If a member of any club / volunteer organisation / society etc, offer to carry out the safety stuff, normally the current post holder is only too pleased to get rid of (I was a member of an angling club, as soon as they found out I had the cert, that was it, couple of phone calls later and 1 years free membership), this will start getting you some experience. Contact small local businesses and offer your services for a small fee or some other form of reward (local garage, your services in exchange for the next service on your vehicle free), again this builds up experience. If you are currently employed, ask if you could be involved in the safety stuff as an additional part of your role / join the company safety committee if there is one / ask to start one. Contact the local HSE office, explain that you are looking for a career in H&S, have the cert and ask if you could follow an inspector for a week or two. Not only does this give you an insight into what an inspector does, it can appear on your CV which makes you stand out a bit from the rest. But the best piece of advice I can give is too keep chipping away, apply for anything and everything that interests you, get the professions journals and scan the ads, register with all the leading H&S agencies. Good luck for the future.
