At 40 years old I decided on a career change from manual construction work to doing my Nebosh Cert. Passed in August and have applied for many jobs but nothing until at last I have an interview, for a construction site safety officer reporting to a manager, applicant must have a broad range of knowledge. Can someone please assist with pointers as to what i may need know from an experienced site safety officer point of view. Been a good few years since I was anywhere near an interview,as our jobs usually come by word of mouth and no interview is needed as the site men normally know what you can and cant do. Thank you all in advance.

All I can add is use your site experience, you can't buy it. Remember what it felt like the first time you walked on a construction site and go through the stages, starting with induction. Add to this your knowledge gained through qualification--the 4 'c's in particular. Don't forget to offer a strong handshake when they offer you the position !

I always find with Safety Professionals that have worked in the field before moving on to safety have a very good understanding of the risks and tasks performed by the workers.
So make sure you point out your detailed understanding of the implications of safety decisions and your ability to easily communicate with the workforce as you know what challenges they face. Point out that you will be able to gain the credibility from the workforce as you have got your hands dirty in the past.
I believe basic risk assessment is the key to site safety - if you can get people to stop and think about the task and what can go wrong for a couple of minutes - they rarely hurt themselves.
Good Luck.
