Posted By Paul Price As the subject suggests looks like the scrapheap beckons . I am the health and Safety officer for a pharmaceutical company in Luton . I have the NEBOSH GC (2005)CIEH Foundation Certificate (2003) AMT manual Handling training and assessors certificate (2001).I have been involved in H and S for several years and I am up to a new challenge but my age and lack of a driving licence things look a bit grim .

Posted By CW Why would your age be against you? Apart from it being illegal to discriminate against age, I know employers who actively encourage applications from the more mature amongst the potential workforce. The driving licence may be an issue, but it is not the brick wall.

Posted By Paul Leadbetter I agree; while lack of a driving licence may limit your opportunities, you should emphasise your positive attributes. Good luck Paul

Posted By Brett Day Maybe a silly question, but why no driving licence, is this something that you could rectify with say an intensive driving course? It's just that with your experience I would have thought that there is work out there for you I know of a couple of pharmicutical companies out near Harlow way that have been looking for safety staff but have hit problems with getting people of the requisite experience. having commuted the other direction, it's not too bad a drive.

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Is the lack of a current licence by choice or circumstances? - the two obvious ones that spring to mind are as a banned driver or an epilepsy sufferer. If neither of these are pertaining to you, then you need to consider how close to public transport routes you are in case of any travel involved for work - is public transport to and from a long term job a problem? - it would be for most short term "site a day" jobs.

Posted By Paul Price I chose not to drive for a couple of reasons . Firstly I was involved in a RTA when younger which threw my confidence a bit secondly I was involved in the pub trade in London for twenty years and the costs of parking ,insurance etc:and the availability of public transport plus a wife who drives i did't need to. I do have good public transport and live within a half hours train journey of central London .

Posted By Tony abc jprhdnMurphy My advice is that your experience would be beneficial to many companies, and lack of a driving license is not a barrier to work in this industry. In fact you could argue that you are minimising risk by steering clear of our Motorways. As someone who travels 1000 miles a week I can assure you road travel is not what is cracked up to be. As previously stated concentrate on the positives.

Posted By Paul Price Thanks for all your input . Transport does not seem the problem . Age seems to be the bar we know it should'nt be but I have my suspicions. Kind regards to all

Posted By willhiem scrap heap for you my friend!!! only kidding!! dont give up, i dont think age is holdiong you back (probably people get the wrong idea about the not driving!!) in my old job before i left they took on someone who was 59, it was great going about with him seeing how people reacted to him, had this whole different way of dealing with people, effective and great to learn from so i wouldnt say you'd be past it at all. though one thing about him being older - he did waffle on a bit about fishing way too much, but what can you do!!
