Can anyone offer me assistance with how to search for an offshore safety role?

I have searched for a while, with little joy and think I'm may be looking in the wrong places. I am currently employed as an offshore crane operator & banksman with IOSH managing safely and NEBOSH national general certificates and have several years experience as an SI971 safety rep. Functions for this included STOP tours, permit auditing, new start inductions, site inspections and chairing safety meetings etc. Also I have loads of experience with planning risk assessments and simple lifting plans.

As I now have gained the experience to move on, I believe the time is right to look for a full time safety role offshore.
To benefit my career potential and further my experience, I have worked on a consultancy basis for local business onshore, writing general policy statements, policy documents and planning risk assessments and now have the ability to work offshore in a ltd status should this be required.

If you can offer assistance on how to move from my present offshore position into a safety one, I would be very grateful for the advice.

Regards,

James

I have been asking the same question for a couple of years myself, but as you have experience as a safety rep then it should be easier. I am a Rigger myself and i think it is more of being in the right place at the right time and knowing the right person. Many people have told me that if you go abroad to get your first job or with the shutdowns coming up try and get some contract work, would i be right in assuming that you are working on the drilling side of the industry? i gather you have tried the 2 main job websites for the industry? If you are employed currently offshore i would suggest asking the health and safety advisor aboard if you can help out with his day to day duties when you are not busy or at the end of the shift, then when he is on holiday put yourself in the frame to cover for him, that will get you experience and show a company that you are both keen and able.

William,

Thanks for your response. I work for the platform and not in drilling at present. Unfortunately as the only crane driver onboard I never have any free time to offer help to the platforms HSEQ Advisor. When there's no lifting required, there's always work to be done on the cranes of some kind or other.
I did look into the Sparrows position, but it is an onshore job, which would mean relocating and the money is not there to justify it. I am really looking to stay offshore if possible.

Regards, Jim

I know what you mean about not wanting to relocate, have you tried "optimus she", they are always looking for people, especially with the shutdowns coming up. They specialise in safety coaching and you may have come across them offshore, i have and there is a contact on their website if you want to send them your CV you may get lucky.
