Hello,

Can any body point me in the right direction? I'm currently looking for a job in the north east. I have my NGC and currently halfway through my diploma. I have no real H&S experience, and my back ground is in equestrianism as a riding instructor, where job are extremely rear.

I would be happy to work in any sector, but My lack of experience is frustratingly holding me back. I'm not looking for a large salary job, just an opportunity to work my way up the career ladder.

Many thanks

Claire

When you say that Claire does it mean you are prepared to start at the bottom.

Hi Claire.

I know how you feel as I have a NGC and no experience. I just keep sending spec letters and applications to any company I feel may be worth approaching. No luck yet.

It feels like as soon as you say you have no experience they do not want to know. But I am an optimist and feel someone will consider me if i ask enough people. [even if it just to shut me up :-) ]

Nice one , Pete, I think that your play on the misspelt word was missed / ignored in the answer !

Best of luck in a very specialised field, Claire, try writing to any local racecourses in your area.

Try some of the specialist recruitment agencies (adverts in SHP). Some of them are very good.

Hi Claire and everyone else trying to get a foot in the door.

I managed to secure a foot in the door position by gaining a contract position for a start, i think sometimes projects require safety officers/advisers at extremely short notice, the roles may be a bit of a policing role but give you a start. Contracting is always a bit more risky than a permanent position but can also be more lucrative. Try having a look on www.justengineers.net www.jobsite.com and search for temp/contract positions.

Good luck

Simon

Claire,

Another route to try is contacting your LA H&S dept. Send a speculative CV to the head, you can usually get their name from the website or call the dept and ask for it, and ask to shadow the advisers and officers. I have done this before for not only health and safety but for environmental health and they are always very accommodating (and flexible). Worth a try while trying to find something permanent.

Also have a good look through your local business pages and the surrounding areas local directories to see what major companies are lurking about that you may not have realised. I had a drive around an industrial park about 2o mins from my home only to discover 10 major manufacturing companies that I never even knew had offices in this area, went into reception asked for the name of their H&S Manager and off went a CV to them all. Got positive feedback (no vacancies unfortunately) but if something were to arise, your name is already sitting in front of them!

Good luck.
