Hi All

I'm currently working in a Quality Managers role, however, it looks as though I'm about to be made redundant. I'm really keen to move towards a career in H&S and have recently gained the NGC. I'm seriously considering studying for the Diploma, self funded if necessary, but am worried about finding myself in the same position as many others who post on this forum seem to be in i.e. sufficient qualifications BUT insufficient experience.

Another dilemma I have concerns membership of IOSH. I have a degree (from the dim and distant past I hasten to add!) that is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) so in theory I could join them at a higher level than I would currently be able to with IOSH. Can anyone offer any advice on this? Is the CIEH a viable alternative to IOSH for a career solely in H&S - as I can't imagine picking up the environmental side of things now after such a long time out?

I think basically I need to decide whether I should go for it and try and switch the focus of my career from Quality, and any advice from experienced H&S practitioners would be very useful in helping me make the decision.

In terms of the experience you may find it slightly easier to get into H+S if you already have experience in QA + E.

Prior to having any experience in H+S, a few years ago i was taken on by a company as a QA+E advisor. They indicated that they wanted all their staff to be 'QUESH' advisors so because i had the other two, were willing to provide training for me to do the H+S side of things. By already having been involved in QA + E employers will know that you have experience of auditing, knowledge of management systems and good communication skills, all of which are transferable to H+S.

So if you were to look for jobs which wanted all 3, you may find this a way in.

Although i started in QA, i then dropped it after 3 years when i moved companies. I probably wouldnt be in H+S if it werent for getting involved in the other two first.

Thanks Dav

I understand where you are coming from with the synergies between Quality and H&S/Env. To be honest I'm hoping that my Quality background will help me to broaden my skill set and encompass the other 2 disciplines, as I'm starting to find Quality on it's own a little tiresome.

Thanks again.

If you have qualifications recognised by environmental health then perhaps you're cut out for a career in H&S enforcement.

Recruiting staff with the Diploma is beyond most LA's. In a previous job , we took on people with the certificate and trained them up.
