Just as is say's on the tin.
Is there such a job as a H&S Sales Person.
I went to see a Client not so long ago and he asked me if I was a Consultant or a Salesman.
Mmmm I thought..
Is there such a job. If so, who trains these people to go around and sell H&S Policies etc.
All thoughts welcome.
Ohh,,,and where do they come from???????

Yeah,
Very strange question "are you a Salesman".
If there is any Salesperson out there the chances are they wouldn't be on a site like this, they would be on a sales website/ forum.
Still very curious.
I believe that the person my Client was from a very big UK wide company that I'm sure we all know.
In it for the money and no more>>>

Used to work for a consultancy who had a team of about 15 sales staff - each had a different patch of the country to sell h&s services. They were paid basic salary + commission etc.
Good for the consultants, didn't have sales targets to meet, but bad from the point of view that the sales people didn't really have a clue what they were selling or the implications of what they were selling.
Once had a sales guy sell a risk assessment for a large paper mill, thought it could be done in 2 or 3 days!!! pathetic.
All a bunch of sharks, all they were interested in was getting a sale and the commission that went with it.
All tended to be ex business to business insurance sales people etc, as selling h&s can be viewed very much as selling insurance - employers liability insurance etc

Its seems to be a insurance thing right enough.
I would be very interested in what there brief was?
Has any one heard about these people that go around?

Yes I've had contact with some companies who offer H+S training and will sell or hire related equipment i.e. confined space equipment. In the environmental arena there are many such positions, who sell spill kits etc.

Yeah,
I have many safety item sales Persons but not a document sales Person.
I wonder what the legalities are on such a operation.

In a previous life I was a salaried H&S consultant (there were two of us in Europe) we had three full time sales people selling our services. Plus an office staff of four.
Having eventually realised that they were selling my services per day for what I was getting, gross, per month I left and went independent at half price.
This meant I had to be my own sales person. Not easy as before I just had to turn up at the appointed time and do the business, but since I only had to sell the equivalent of two days per month to get back my old salary (yeah, I know that's a bit simplistic) It worked.
Nothing this week. It's Bastille day.
The H&S "products" of that group were, in addition to safety management systems, safety training programs and "speciality products" (air monitoring pumps and so on) and a number of safety videos.
And the rep who comes to show you the latest safety shoes, gloves or glasses is an H&S product salesperson. Not to mention the multitude of ads in SHP for training programmes.
So yes, the job exists. At a number of levels. In fact if the H&S salesperson (and I am including in that category every single H&S working stiff trying to sell management on some H&S necessity) didn't exist then we would have to invent them.
