Greetings all..
I have just been given a opportunity to work for a small/medium sized Engineeering company that makes specialist diesel engines for the marine industry in a factory environment. The main engines are casted elsewhere but the components are added at the factory.
They have been told they need a "safety assistant/advisor in there firm to advise"
I have my Nebosh Gen cert & have told them & that I hae no experience in the marine industry, though am keen to learn & have some of the information on the NEBOSH manuals.
They are looking for someone to work from the there manuals and produce working documents & risk assessments etc.
I am mainly office & leisure based safety, and have told them so & they STILL have given me the post. They seem to understand that its hard to find a person with exact marine engine experience
My question is am I going to be competent in this role and where can I get more specialist safety information?
Its a temp position for 3 months that may lead to permanant with other duties..
any help or advise would be greatly useful,
many thanks Graeme

Start by ensuring they have a sound H&S policy, it has been brought to the attention of all the staff and everyone is aware of their roles and responsibilities. I don't think you should worry too much about getting to know the engine itself, instead focus on the manufacturing/assembly activities and processes. Ensure these are being done in a safe efficient manner by adequately trained staff, wearing the correct PPE and being supervised. I know how daunting it can be changing industries, but try to remember that the basic principles of H&S will remain the same. Make sure you have clear channels of communication to the Managers and shop floor staff, get to know the processes involved and I'm sure you will adapt in no time.

Privately I would give you all the support that you ask for SFAIIRPTDS.
Publicially is another case of doing H&S on the cheap - they would not have inexperienced people machining parts without support would they?
Best of luck!
